Isaac walked back inside the hospital room without the doctor and I felt the urge to rip his head off. There was something seriously wrong with him right now.
"Husband?" I felt my red eyes come forward.
"They wouldn't let me in unless I was family, and I didn't want to say she was my sister." Isaac made a disgusted face at the word sister.
Maria wrapped her hand around me from behind, and placed her palm on my stomach. I listened as she sat up and pushed her legs over the side of the bed. She had me sit next to her, which I did happily. I pulled her onto my lap, not breaking eye contact with Isaac as I did so.
"We all need to clear the air here. First, Isaac, you need to break all romantic contact with me. I don't care how you feel about me as long as you don't act that way," Maria said.
"Don't do this," Isaac begged.
"You're making me uncomfortable and it needs to stop."
"I don't smell discomfort coming off you, the opposite actually," Isaac bit back.
"If you're going to act this way, I'm going to have to cut you off completely." Maria looked at him with a dead look across her face.
"Fine. I'll find somewhere else to stay. See you all later." Isaac stormed out of the room.
I turned Maria around to wrap her legs around my waist, "Are you alright?"
Maria nodded and wrapped her arms around my neck. She pulled me in so tightly I wasn't sure there was any molecules between us.
"I don't like when you're angry at me," Maria whispered.
"I don't like being angry."
"No, you're scary when you're angry."
I pulled her back enough to look her in the eyes, but she refused to meet mine. I hadn't considered how I looked to her, but I had seen her angry when she was a wolf and that scared me, so I could only imagine. I held her face in my hands and wait for her eyes to meet mine.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"I know that. It's just difficult," Maria trailed off.
I pressed my lips to hers. I wasn't sure how to make her feel better. I just needed to show I wasn't the monster I had acted like. Her skin was soft against my lips as I trailed them down her neck to her mark. I felt electricity move through my body as I touched it.
"Dylan," Maria moaned.
Maria pulled at my hair and I pulled her tighter against my chest. I could feel her heartbeat thumping against my chest and I had noticed the pauses between beats changing, as if her heartbeat had changed. I hadn't listened to it carefully in some time, so it was more than possible I just didn't notice this before, but I thought I knew the beat better than I knew the back of my hand.
"Maria," I said.
Her hooded eyes met mine, "Yes beautiful?"
"What's wrong with your heart?"
"Do you hear something?" Maria's face fell.
"I'm not sure what I hear," I admit.
Maria sat beside me and combed her fingers through her hair. She picked up her phone and called her father, the last person I honestly expected her to call. Instead of answering her over the phone, he forced her to tell him where she was and then he was on his way.
I wasn't sure how he got in considering she was listed as Maria Archer, but he managed. He stopped at the door and acted like an invisible barrier was put in place to keep him from coming any closer. Like a caged tiger, he paced his invisible cage.
