Chapter 37: Back to the start

(300 years ago)

I sighed, staring up at the bright blue sky as the organs laid all around me. We formed a circle shape the way we all sat as we rejoiced in the suns heat.
"Ah... Now this is the life" Tammy exhaled, sighing in pleasure as she sun kissed her chocolate skin. Tammy's frizzy hair was combed back into a bun which I had done for her early in the morning.
Ruki sat next to me, tracing circles on my hand with his fingertips as his other hand held his book, his eyes grimacing the pages rapidly.
I decided to open my eyes and look up at Ruki lovingly, my right hand reaching out to touch his hair.
Ruki giggled and put his bookmark in the page he was on, closing his book and lying down on his stomach to stare back at me.
"Yes~?" He teased, taking my hand and kissing the back of it before giving me the brightest smile he could muster.
My dead heart began to pump in my chest quickly. I had many moments where my heart came alive because of his love and affection, and I still don't believe it's physically possible. No one had ever made me feel like this before, not to the point my immortality was questioned because of a simple heartbeat.
I didn't care though, I'd never cared about my heart beating because I knew it was a sign of him making me feel loved.
"Give me attentio-n" I dragged on the word and played with his blue-grey hair. Ruki chuckled and ran his fingers through my hair softly, playing with it and braiding it sometimes.
"I am paying attention Eve, but I'll only do that if you do the same" he smiles and leans down to kiss my head softly, immediately making me giggle and blush.
"You're so silly Ruki, I love you" I grinned happily and watched as a light pink flushed across his cheeks and the tops of his ears.
"I love you too, sweetheart" he replies.
We share a moment of love and savour everything that's happening around us. I rest my head in the corner of Ruki's lap and torso to protect my face and head from the suns heat, and he strokes my hair the entire time while staring at me with adoration.
"Sooo... does this mean you guys are a thing?" We both looked over to Tammy and the orphans who were staring at us with gleaming eyes full of hope. We were caught.
Ruki sighed, a smile still plastered to his face as he nodded his head and let his fingertips touch my cheek.
"Indeed, she's the only one that matters to me" his words caused small tears to appear at the corners of my eyes and I raised a hand to catch them in time before they fell.
Tammy and the orphans swooned at his words and began asking him tons more questions about me and him.

"Eve! Do you feel the same about Ruki?" Tammy eagerly asked, jumping up and down as she awaited her answer.
I simply chuckled, propping myself up on my elbows so I was facing her.
"Well... of course it's the same for me, Ruki's the reason I'm happy and he's the reason I feel alive and free. Without him, my whole world would be dark and I'd be very much lost" I looked over to him and smiled my sweetest smile, causing his blush to brighten.
Ruki intertwined his fingers with mine and we leaned our heads against each other's.
Tammy and the orphans made small sounds of happiness and joy, clapping their hands and bickering to one another about the news.

"I wonder when the boys will be back" I kept my eyes closed, my head still on his as he hummed in response. His lips were rested on my forehead and his arm was resting right next to mine, we both stayed like this until my question was answered.
"Hey guys! We're back!" Edgar spoke with his high pitched voice, making Ruki jolt up in shock from his position, almost hitting me in the face with his elbow which he intensely apologised for.
"Wow, hey... what's happening here?" Edgar's voice trailed off as soon as he spotted us cuddling. His expression fell off his face and he looked like he'd been stabbed in the chest.
"Oh hey Edgar!" I stood up and gave him a large bear hug, causing him to hesitantly wrap his arms around my waist and pat my back awkwardly.
"I-uh... you're dating?" Was his words. I tilted my head to the side and nodded, a smile plastered on my face as I looked back to Ruki who also smiled.
"We certainly are!" Ruki responded proudly. The boys looked surprised, Edgar, Emilio and Azusa. All of them.
The other orphans went silent and waited patiently for the brothers reaction.
Yuma looked a tad little angry, his eye twitching and his hands clenched. Kou was smiling but you could tell his single eye held some kind of confusion. Azusa just frowned and looked at the ground emotionlessly, as he always did.
Eve and Ruki were to focused on each other to notice the almost negative reactions from the boys. We held hands once more and his lips kissed my cheek softly, making me giggle and kiss him sweetly.
"I have to go" Edgar mumbled before stomping away like a stroppy kid with the rest following behind him. Tammy looked quite shocked at what she'd just witnessed and crawled up to Ruki and I, her face written with concern.
"Are you guys not worried about their reactions?" She said, sitting next to me with her elbows propped up on the ground.
Ruki leaned his head up and his eyes met hers quickly.
"I don't care what anyone has to say about our relationship" I blushed at his words and leaned my body closer to his, feeling the warmth from his blood pump throughout his entire body as he wrapped an arm over my shoulder.
"She's mine" he whispered, enveloping me in a hug which caused my back to hit the ground.
Tammy giggled at the both of us before returning to the group of orphan preteens.

As evening crawled upon us, I returned to the orphanage with everyone and we all sat in bed. Ruki was sleeping next to me with his head resting on my chest and I sang a sweet melodic tune to help the orphans sleep. Ruki listened to my singing throughout the night and held me close to him until he fell asleep.
"Are you going to Scarborough fair~?" I sung, closing my eyes and remembering the song my brother, Kanato used to sing for me and his mother, Cordelia.
I was singing the song until I heard snores from all around the room, and with that, I closed my eyes and everything went black.
