It was the weekend. I had to go visit my mom in the hostpital because I hadn't seen her in long while. I quickly rummaged my closet and threw on something casual to wear. I went into the lounge. As always, I was the only one there. No one else lived with me. I take care of this house, and myself, all alone. Since I'm always alone, whenever I'm out, I lock up the house. Though in terms of family, I'm not all alone. I still have my mom. And there's another person, but I haven't heard from them in a long while. They must've forgotten about me.

When I reached the hospital, I was taken to my mom's room. They told me she was sleeping but I could still see her. I grabbed the door handle. I hesitated on whether I wanted to see her. I wondered if she was doing better than before, or worse! I decided I still wanted to see her. I opened the door and went in. After I was in, I shut the door to have some privacy. My mom was asleep. Her beautiful wavy brown hair spread all across her pillow. Some of it was falling into her eyes, so I pushed it away.

"Mom?" I whispered.

Her eyelids slowly opened to reveal her beautiful ocean blue eyes.

"Carrie! You're here!" she whispered slowly.

She tried to get up. She was kind of weak, so I helped her up.

"Hey, mom! How are you feeling?" I asked in a soothing voice.

"I'm feeling much better. How are you? How's my little angel doing?" she asked with a caring tone.

"OK, first of all, I'm fine thank you! And second of all, I'm sixteen. I'm not little anymore!" I said the last part with crossed arms.

"But you'll still be am angel to me!" she said.

My mom always knew the best way to cheer me up. She was sweet and caring. She was also upbeat and happy. But right now, just the first thing.

"How's school? Make any friends?"

"Yes! His name is Jake! I went to his house yesterday! We worked and talked, but mostly talked and-"

"Whoa, whoa! Time out!" she said waving her hands.

"Sorry! I just got kinda excited!" I said while blushing.

"Well, he must be a good friend. I'm so proud of you! So, this Jake! Is he your friend or-"

"Mom! Don't even think about it!" I said quickly.

"OK! But next time, bring him over!" she proposed.

"Fine! But don't say anything embarassing!" I said while pointing at her.

"Fine, fine!" she said while putting her arms up in surrender.

I laughed at this gesture and soon enough she joined in. For me, just seeing that smile on her face is enough to brighten my day.

That night, after changing into my pajamas, I got a text. I checked who it was from. I hadn't received any messages from anyone for a long time. When I saw who it was, a smile crept it's way to my face. It was from Jake.

Hey, beautiful!

When I read this, I started laughing. The one thing he knew how to do was how to make me laugh. We talked for a really long time. By the time he had to go, it was 3 pm. I was shocked. I couldn't believe we talked for such a long time. I was really happy for the fact that he risked the fact of getting busted for staying up late just to talk to me. I put my phone down and climbed into bed. I quickly drifted off to sleep, having sweet dreams for the first time in years.
