Doppelgänger. Another supernatural being was added to Madeline's list of 'what the fuck'.
"At first I thought she was Katherine. But I knew, straight away, that they were nothing alike." Stefan's words rang through Madeline's head for the rest of the day.
The younger Salvatore was currently out gallivanting with Bonnie, while Madeline waited at home for Elena to return from her impromptu trip out with Damon.
But as soon as Elena walked through the front door, Madeline knew something was wrong.
"Oh god, what's happened?" She pulled the younger brunette into a hug, "Talk to me, Lee, what's wrong?"
"I've just found out...I'm adopted."
Madeline felt her heart sink into her stomach, "What, Lee?"
"My last name is Gilbert and Katherine's is Pierce, for a start." She swallowed the lump in her throat. "I confronted Jenna about it at the Grill, about an hour ago. And she didn't deny it."
Madeline sat down next to her sister, in the living room, "Well, I mean..." She sighed, "Now that I think about it, I can remember mum being pregnant with Jem...but not you." She pulled Elena into another hug when the younger brunette had tears in her eyes.
Elena wiped tears from her eyes and rested her head on Madeline's shoulder, "I don't understand how you didn't think about this until now...you could've said something to me."
"I was three, Elena. Mum and dad brought you home one evening and told me I had I sister. I can remember asking where babies come from, and they said something about 'when mummies and daddies love each other very much, they make a baby', blah blah blah, and then something about a fat bird that carried a baby in a bag." She tucked a lock of Elena's hair behind her ear and looked lovingly at her; she placed a kiss on her forehead, "My little sister; who I love so much that it hurts. God, you piss me off at times, sure - but siblings do that! I can remember brushing your hair before you went to bed, and making you eat worms out of the garden because I told you they were good for you."
Elena laughed but grimaced at that. "I can't believe you didn't know."
"I'm shocked, Lee...but I'm not upset because you're still my sister - nothing will ever change that!"
Elena wiped the last of her tears away and smiled, "Did you really think a Stork dropped me off?"
"Hey, I was three; do you really think mum and dad were going to give me 'the talk' then?" She laughed. "I'd probably have needed counselling from the age of four or something, and squealed every time a boy touched me; thinking I was going to get pregnant with a little Elena germ."
Elena shoved Madeline playfully, "I bet you'd rather an 'Elena germ' than a Jeremy germ."
"Oh god, yes!" Madeline rolled her eyes, "Could you imagine two of him? I love him but I couldn't cope with two of him!"
"Me neither!"
"Besides...even one of you is a handful."
"Hey!"
"'Hey' yourself! We wouldn't be dealing with all of this supernatural shit, if it wasn't for you!"
"That's true." Elena blushed, "I'm so glad I pocket dialled you that day."
"I'm not. I could've been blissfully ignorant all this time."
The two sisters sat with one another for the evening in front of the television, Jeremy sat in his room perusing over their father's journal for his history paper as Madeline ordered a pizza for her siblings.
