Madeline's head was pounding that next morning. She groaned and rolled over as she pulled a pillow over her face.
"Maddie? Do you want breakfast?"
"No, thank you, Jenna." She frowned then, "Jenna, are you ill? Your voice sounds like-" She looked up to find her Aunt - not her Aunt. "Damon?" She flew into a sitting position, which was when she found herself not in her own bed.
She was dressed though, at least. "Where am I?"
"Oh, at the Boarding House." He replied nonchalantly, stepping into the room and waving around a spatula. "I'm making vampcakes, do you want some?"
"Vamp-what?"
"Vampcakes. Well, pancakes."
She blinked at him, "I don't think so...I think I should go home." She held a hand to her head, "What the hell happened last night? I'm not even old enough to drink yet."
"We went dancing." Damon replied, coaxing her out of bed and down the stairs to sit at the breakfast bar. "Of course, you didn't want to at first. But after realising how much fun I am, well, I'll call you Baby, because we had the time of our lives."
A plate was placed in front of her. It was a pancake with whipped cream fangs and blueberry eyes. She laughed, "I am going to eat this, purely because it looks hilarious."
Damon grinned before sitting beside her with his own pancake.
"But seriously, how much alcohol was there?"
"You said one drink, I said one bottle." He popped a blueberry into his mouth. "So, we compromised and had a bottle of bourbon each."
"Oh god." She cut herself a slice of the pancake and...it was heavenly. "There is no way that you made this."
"I'll have you know, I am an excellent cook!" He replied, taking mock offence. "I'm also excellent in bed, but you passed out before I could offer you my services as a rebound."
She snorted, "Thanks, but you're not my type."
"Excuse me? Tall, dark, handsome and mysterious isn't your type?"
"What can I say? I'm not your typical teenage girl."
Damon chuckled, before his attention was drawn to a figure over his shoulder, "Morning Steffie, how did you sleep? Like the dead, I hope."
"Damon." Came a grumbled response, "Which poor girl have you compelled this time?"
"Compelled?" Madeline asked, turning around to greet her sisters boyfriend.
"Madeline!" Stefan froze on the spot, "What are you doing here? Has Damon hurt you?"
"No..." Her eyes flickered between the two brothers. "My date abandoned me out in the sticks, so Damon picked me up and took me dancing. We drank. I passed out. And here we are, eating breakfast..." she gestured to the pile of pancakes on the counter between them. "Vampcake?"
"No."
"Come on..." Damon teased. "I know blueberry's are your favourite..."
Stefan stood there, glaring at Damon before he finally caved. "Alright, I'll have one."
"He means five." Damon nudged Madeline with his elbow. "So, Stefanie, hows Elena?"
"Yeah, I've been meaning to talk to her about what's going on but...she's always out." Madeline said, putting her fork down once she was full. "I suppose rather than keep waiting, I can just grill you now." She narrowed her eyes at Stefan as Damon supplied some whipped cream fangs to his little brother's breakfast. "Hurt her, I'll kill you. I think that's simple enough, right?"
Both brothers exchanged an amused glance with one another before Stefan coughed awkwardly, "Err...yeah, that's simple enough. I understand, yeah."
Madeline smiled, "I mean, I wouldn't really do that. But as the older sibling, I think I'm entitled to say that? I did the same thing to Matt Donovan."
Damon frowned, and licked some cream off of his finger, "Is he still breathing?
"Elena broke his heart. Matt gets a freebie."
Throughout the rest of breakfast, Stefan asked Madeline questions about what she and Damon got up to, and kept repeating them...Madeline began to think that the younger Salvatore brother was incredibly strange. Especially when his eyes met hers and she felt as though she couldn't not answer him.
"I think I'm going to head on home." She said, "Thank you for last night, Damon. And for breakfast."
He grinned, "Anytime, Maddie. It was my pleasure! Hey, why don't we make this dance night a weekly thing?"
"I don't know, from what I can remember, the place was a bit of a dive."
"Yeah, but it can be our dive. Come on...the music was good...and I bet you haven't danced with anyone as good as me, right?"
"I guess I haven't." She couldn't help but chuckle, "Alright. But we'll have to make it Saturdays because of work- Oh." She was no longer working at the school until she 'recovered'. "Yeah, actually, any night is good with me."
"Do you want a ride home?" Stefan offered, "I need to talk to Elena anyway."
"No, I'm okay thanks. I think the fresh air will help with the hangover."
"Are you sure?" Damon asked, "It's quite a long way to the Gilbert House. Have a drive with Stefan, you can get the gossip about him and Elena then."
She smiled up at the younger Salvatore then, "Alright, thank you."
Stefan nodded, and the three of them held a small conversation while the younger Salvatore ate his vampcakes. Well, Stefan and Damon held a conversation, which Madeline couldn't help but feel as though there was an underlying tone of secrecy.
Stefan drove Madeline home, and she fired question after question at him. He did not intend to sleep with Elena and never call her again; he did not intend to play her for a fool; he did not have eyes on any other girl, etc etc.
"Have I...err, passed the suitable boyfriend exam?"
Madeline giggled, "Yeah, I guess you have."
Stefan grinned, "Good."
"Thanks for the ride home." Madeline said, as the two of them walked up the steps to the Gilbert residence. The brunette unlocked the front door, and stepped inside before holding it open for Stefan to enter. She closed the door behind him once he was standing over the threshold.
"I'll send Elena down." She said, "God, I need a shower."
Madeline passed her little sister on the landing, and once she explained to Elena what had happened on her 'date' and her younger sister gave her opinion on the matter - Madeline showered and dressed before flopping down on her bed.
The brunette milled around for the rest of the day, and did the same for the next week or so - overhearing her sister on the phone to Bonnie about Damon skipping town and Stefan breaking up with her. Madeline hoped her older sister threats hadn't been the cause of the issue.
But it was the following Thursday afternoon, when Madeline answered a pocket dial from Elena...she knew their lives were never going to be the same again.
"What are you?"
She didn't particularly want to intrude on what appeared to be a private conversation between her little sister and someone else, so Madeline had been about to hang up, but Elena's next words had her pausing.
"You're a vampire, aren't you? And so is Damon."
Madeline held her breath.
"Yes."
Let me know what you think!
