Elena was in transition to become a vampire.

Damon had fed her his blood when she had been harmed earlier that morning...so Elena had died with his vampire blood in her system.

The main question was: did Elena want to be a vampire?

Madeline knew it wasn't her decision to make, but she wanted to be selfish and force her sister's hand...just as Elena had done with Jeremy. But that would be condemning her little sister to live an immortal life.

"You can feed from me, if you want." Madeline said, cutting off Stefan, Damon and Klaus from their argument.

Elena looked up at her sister, tears streaming down her fair face, "I couldn't ask that of you."

"I'm offering, Lee. You're my little sister."

The younger Gilbert sister looked indecisive, and tucked her wet hair behind her ear. "I don't want to hurt you." She revealed, "I have to think about this, Maddie. I don't know if I want this."

Now that both Gilbert sisters were without a car, Damon and Stefan took Elena home while Klaus held Madeline back for a moment - much to the disgust of Damon. Elena reassured the older Salvatore that Madeline was safe, and with the permission of her older sister, would explain things to both Salvatore brothers in the car.

"I was about ready to stop you." Klaus told her, once they were alone. "I know you want to save your sister, but she will harm you in the process. This bond we have, sweetheart, won't allow me to let you do this."

"Then you cannot be there." Madeline said, looking up at him. "I have to do this, to save my sister."

"I know." He murmured, caressing her face. "I'll drop you home, so that you can change out of your wet things. But then I will have to leave."

As soon as he pulled up outside the Gilbert residence, Madeline pulled him in for a long kiss before she left the vehicle. She heard the engine still running as she walked up to the front door, and he didn't drive off until she was inside the house.

Damon was before her as soon as she stepped over the threshold.

"I thought we were besties." He snarled, "This thing you have going on with Klaus ends now, Madeline! Do you hear me? He's dangerous! He's tried to kill all of us-"

"-Damon, let it go." Stefan warned his brother.

"Keep your mouth shut, Elsa!" Damon yelled, "She's shacking up with the Original Hybrid!"

"Yeah, he's done bad things but we all have." Stefan defended the older Gilbert girl. "Look what you did to Matt's sister - and Caroline... and look at me: I was the Ripper of Monterey."

"That was different." Damon shrugged, "We are the good guys."

"After we were given second chances." Hero Hair countered.

Damon turned a glare towards Madeline, "This isn't over."

Madeline moved away from her vampire best friend and towards her sister, who was sitting on the couch with her head in her hands. "Lee? I don't want to pressure you for a decision, but..." Her eyes filled with tears. "I don't want to lose you. Jem and I can't lose you."

"I don't want to drink from the vein." She said, looking into her sisters eyes, "I don't want to lose control."

"Then we'll make you a glass, right?" Madeline turned around to look at the two Salvatore's. "Will you help me, please?"

"Of course." Damon said, moving towards the kitchen with Madeline in tow.

"What do I do?" She whispered, her hands shaking.

Damon reached into a cupboard to grab a glass, before bringing it over to Madeline. "It's going to hurt, okay?" She nodded, and held her hand out towards Damon and squeezed her eyes closed. She had only ever been bitten once before, and that was by Sam in the neck. That pain was excruciating. She tried to keep her nerves under control, trying not to let herself panic or become scared - she didn't want to put Klaus on edge.

Damon nipped her skin as gently as he could, and although it still hurt - the pain didn't last for very long. He held her wrist over the glass and allowed it to fill about one third of the way before he set the glass on the counter and bit into his own wrist.

"Drink." He said, pressing his wrist to Madeline's mouth.

The brunette drank until her wound had healed over and she washed the blood off of her arm at the kitchen sink, before she followed Damon silently back into the lounge and took her seat beside Elena once more.

"Just pretend it's juice." Damon grinned, his attempt to lighten the mood caused everyone to chuckle slightly.

"Can you all, umm...turn around please?"

Madeline, Damon and Stefan all did as Elena had requested, and once the glass was placed onto the coffee table, they turned around to see Elena wiping at the spot of blood at the corner of her mouth.

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me." Madeline cried, taking her sisters hand in her own, "You're my sister."

"It'll probably be best if you came to live at The Boarding House for a while." Stefan said, "Until you can learn to keep control of your bloodlust."

Elena nodded, "I'll pack some of my things."

Stefan left with his girlfriend, and as soon as they had stepped out of the room, Madeline put her arms around Damon's torso and hugged him tightly.

"I don't know why I'm allowing you the benefit of my empathy," Damon began, putting his arms around her, "It's probably because you're so hot."

"I've missed how inappropriate you are." Madeline murmured against his shoulder, "We haven't been to that amazing dive bar for ages."

"We've been busy." He replied, "You've been sleeping with the Hybrid and I've been looking for a way to kill said Hybrid."

"Do you want to go tonight?"

"Yes."

The two of them made sure Elena settled into the Boarding House with Stefan before they jumped into Damon's car and left Mystic Falls. They were disgusted to find out, however, that since their last 'date night', their beloved dive bar had suddenly become more popular. There were now twelve people there, instead of the usual eight.

"This is an outrage!" Damon exclaimed, covering his ears with his hands as a drunk couple sang 'I Got You Babe' on the karaoke machine. "Don't they know that that is ours?"

"It's preposterous!" Madeline agreed, "I think you should compel them to stand down."

"I think that is a brilliant plan." He slung his arm over her shoulders, "And so the night begins!"

We haven't had some vampire bestie scenes for a while, so thought I'd just add a snippet.
