The Promised One (Klaus Mikaelson/The Vampire Diaries)

Chapter Eighteen

The brunette had just been shopping, her small (but still noticeable) weight gain had encouraged her breasts to grow and she was struggling to find a bra that would fit. Currently, she was wearing one of Hayley's spares, but still, Madeline needed to get some of her own. So, she was spending the voucher that she had received in the mail for new clothes, with a message that read:

Madeline had mentally thanked the vampire, before taking a trip out of the clinic.

She was minding her own business, sipping on a latte before she was seized from behind in both a warm and comforting hug.

"Hey, Maddie, you look amazing!"

"Damon!" She was startled by his sudden appearance, but smiled at him all the same as she turned around to hug him back. "What are you doing here?"

"Well, I came to see how you've been doing..." He waggled his eyebrows. "And I've come to the expert opinion that you're damn hot!"

She scoffed at him, "I've still got a long way to go, but...thanks."

Madeline had been at the clinic for about three months and she had settled into the routines there exceptionally well. She was still finding her confidence eating in front of people, and fighting the urge to run to the bathrooms (which were locked during - and a short while after - meal times) but she quickly realised that everyone around her was in the same boat as her. She looked to them for example, and when a couple more newbies arrived at the clinic, she realised that they would be looking to her for guidance and she didn't want her mistakes to set other people back.

"So," He rubbed his hands together. "Lets go and grab your dancing shoes, bestie. Because we're hitting the town!"

"We're going dancing?" She had done some ballet practice in her room, and there were beautiful gardens surrounding the clinic where she would dance in the sunshine (weather permitted, of course), but she had to admit, she missed her 'date nights' with the older Salvatore.

He caught her up on the happenings in Mystic Falls (obviously leaving out the parts that had been left unresolved), but he reassured Madeline that everyone was safe. "Elena and Jeremy are fine." He said, "So's your aunt, so's Alaric. Speaking of - by the way - has an anti-death ring."

Madeline didn't ask how he had found that out.

They danced and drank, and even shared a bowl of french fries!

"Please come and visit me again, Damon." Madeline said as she hugged her bestie, once he dropped her back at the clinic.

"Alright, you've persuaded me." He chuckled, "I'll pick you up again next Saturday."

Which he did, for the next two months Damon would take her dancing, and sometimes they would even have dinner while he caught her up on the supernatural news in Mystic Falls. The most surprising turn of events, was that Tyler Lockwood was a werewolf!

There was only one month until the end of the school year, and Madeline desperately wanted to be back home for the summer to spend time with her family and to give her sister her book of pranks ready for Elena and her friends to use on Senior Prank Night: one of which included a classroom floor covered in active mousetraps, and another including the use of superglue on a teachers desk.

"Happy early Birthday." Madeline smiled at her friend as Hayley handed her a small gift.

"Oh, Hayley, my birthday isn't until after the summer! You didn't have to get me anything!"

"Of course I did, you're going to be twenty one!" The brunette grinned, ignoring the first sentence, "Go on, open it."

"Seriously, you didn't have to." Inside the box were two charms. One was a little wolf, and the other a crescent. On the back of one, it said 'best' and the other said 'friends'. "Oh! They're so cute! Thank you!"

"Which one are you giving me then?"

"I think the crescent, to match your birth mark." Madeline said, pulling the thin silver chain out of the box that had the pendant engraved with 'best' on it.

"And I'll wear the little wolf charm," Madeline smiled knowingly at her friend, "So I'll always remember that I'm friends with a wolf."

Madeline had found out that Hayley was a werewolf through Damon smelling 'wet dog' on the girl. After his near death encounter with Mason Lockwood - Tyler's Uncle - he had recognised the same scent on her friend. Hayley had mentioned something similar to Madeline, warning her to stay away from Damon because he was 'dangerous'.

Madeline had laughed, and thanked the girl for her concern as she then proceeded to explain that she knew about the supernatural.

"I'm moving out of here in a couple of days." Hayley informed the human.

"So that's why you're giving me this early." Madeline realised, sadly, "Have you had all your vaccinations? And we need to make sure you're microchipped."

Hayley rolled her eyes before thumping her arm, "I've recovered really well." She said, "And so have you, Maddie. It's time for me to go. You've got this now, I promise."

"I'm going to miss you, Hayley." The girls hugged, "Thank you for being my friend, you've really helped settle me here too. For that, I'm so grateful."

"What are friends for, right? And I know I warned you about your vampire friend, but he's encouraging you. He's a good one. I mean, I still hate vampires but...I suppose you've found one that's ok."

"He has his moments." Madeline rolled her eyes with a giggle. "We will keep in contact though, right?"

"Of course, we will." Hayley replied with a beaming smile. "Obviously, not during full moons though."

Although Madeline missed the wolf, she coped well without her. So much so, that she was told that she would be able to return home to Mystic Falls as soon as she felt ready. The brunette stayed at the clinic for one more week, before she felt the time was right.

However, she had no idea of the danger that was lurking back in Mystic Falls; just around the corner.
