39. Yard Life (Poem)

I have a small yard at the front of my house

Which is currently overgrown with weeds

But within the tall grass and gravel

Are dandelions, which can feed the bees.

Out the back the yard is bigger

With space for a table and chairs

Despite the closeness of the other houses

My daughter loves playing out there.

The unsightly concrete and Victorian brick

Are solid and unmoving and dull

Yet within those spaces I can create

A place to live life to the full.

I get the sun until midday

Then until sundown it's out the front door

The rays fill my home with light

And the warmth radiates through the floor.

I'd love a bit more nature out there

But to be honest I can't keep it alive

I plan to make the space more attractive

Then maybe pot a few plants which will thrive.

It's only a small area

But it's mine, my sliver of free air

It's an escape from these four walls

When life becomes too much to bear.

Thank you, blue skies, for being above

I'm grateful for the bright sun, too

Thanks to the bees who visit my weeds

May I ever enjoy my own view.
