Oh how I long for the life before
Ain't no waiting back then
We could be close to the ones we love most
And it was easy to see friends.
Oh how I long for the life before
When choices were easy and free
We spend our time with lovers and wine
And our children were safe to just be.
Oh how I long for the life before
Safety felt quite commonplace
So little danger from passing a stranger
We could find ways to be safe.
Oh how I long for the life before
The freedom to come and go
Schools were safe, jobs were in place
The rhythm of life in flow.
Oh how I long for the life before
I could live the way I saw best
Less fear for the planet and the people left on it
A hope in the future for rest.
Oh how I long for the life before
The bliss of ignorance
I wish it wasn't like this so we didn't have to miss
A whole year in a fantasy trance.
Oh how I long for the life before
To say farewell to our dead
It's not over yet but I pray for the best
And this alone fills me with dread
Do I still yearn for the life before
To feel safe even though we're not?
Wars and hatred, lives lost and abated
The Earth and its people in rot.
The problem we had with the life before
Was the promise of ease in store
We'll long for the norm but it'll never return
To the life we had before.
