Seven years after Hiccup defeated the Red Death, Berk had made peace with the dragons and incorporated them into their everyday lifestyle. Some relationships even started to form, such as Hiccup and Astrid's. The two were now happily married, and things were even better with Valka back on Berk. The twins still caused explosions and Snotlout was arrogant as always, Fishlegs being the first to reprimand him, but other than those commotions that the whole gang had gotten used to seeing in their everyday lives, times were good.
There was huge news that every Berkian had heard about, and they were completely ecstatic. Astrid was expecting a child. They were told it would be a boy, and one day he would become Chief of the tribe, just like his legendary father Hiccup.
Hiccup and Astrid had been living in a home of their own for two years now as they took on the world together. Of course, Mrs. Astrid Haddock still remained her husband's loyal second-in-command, and she didn't mind. They would go about their day, handling the chiefing duties and such. But one night, when everything seemed just perfect, it all changed.
It was in the middle of the night when Astrid jolted up from the bed, feeling a tremendous pain in her stomach. Like any pregnant woman she had contractions, but this was no contraction.
Astrid tried her best to get out of bed, trying not to wake Hiccup in the process. Her legs were anything but steady, still she headed downstairs to get some warm tea to calm her down.
But suddenly she stopped in her tracks, the pain striking her like a bolt of electricity. She cringed her teeth. Something wasn't right.
Then Astrid started to feel faint. Something sticky ran down her legs: blood. Again her stomach felt the pain like the blow of a baseball bat, and she let out a scream.
"Astrid?" Hiccup asked groggily as he sat up in bed. His wife wasn't laying beside him like she should be. There came another shriek just outside the room, and Hiccup's eyes widened as he began to panic. He hoped nothing bad was happening to the baby or to his wife. He quickly sprung out of bed, his prosthetic still on, and ran as fast as he could to reach the woman who was shrieking in absolute pain.
She was near the staircase, unable to go down on her own because the pain was so unbearable. She wrapped her arms around herself and bent over, panicking as blood poured down onto the floor. She knew what was happening.
She was losing the baby.
"Astrid!" Hiccup cried once again, holding his wife's shoulders. For a moment he looked around, trying to see what exactly Astrid looked so terrified at. Then he saw the red-stained floor and immediately his heart began to race.
"Hold on, babe," Hiccup told her as he ran to get a blanket. Once he had successfully grabbed one, he wrapped it around Astrid to keep her warm, and to hopefully stall the blood flow. Astrid was so tight in the blanket that she couldn't even move her her feet, but she didn't care much about that.
"Put your arms around me," her husband instructed, and she did just that. He gently picked her up in his arms and ran outside, ushering Toothless over. "C'mon bud, we need to get mom and Gothi." The Night Fury warbled his understanding, and leaned down so Hiccup could climb on easier. Astrid was still in his arms, and he placed his arm around her as they flew off to retrieve some help.

"Mom! Mom!" Hiccup yelled in dire panic. He laid Astrid down on the sofa in his mother's house, and now he was trying to locate her.
Valka walked down the stairs while she rubbed her tired eyes, but the green irises quickly widened as she saw a bewildered looking son in front of her, and a pained looking Astrid behind him.
