*Sequel to One More Gone*
It had been five months since Hiccup and Astrid had lost their first child. It was heart wrenching not only for Hiccup and Astrid, but for the entire village. Everyone had been looking forward to welcoming the next heir to the throne of Berk. Unfortunately, they never got to welcome the chieftain's child into the world. The baby wasn't able to survive, and the night the baby left them still haunted everyone, the thought unsettling in the back of their minds.
Out of the whole Berkian population, Astrid was traumatized the most. She practically hated herself. She couldn't carry a baby. She couldn't give Hiccup the opportunity to be a father. She just couldn't seem to do anyhting right, at least that's what she told herself. Hiccup always objected, saying that Astrid didn't have to produce an heir to earn his affection, and she knew that. But when Hiccup would tell her that it's not her fault that they lost the baby, that it was just something neither of them had control of, Astrid still blamed herself and wished Hiccup could see the obvious.
After a very tiring day of chiefing and dragon training, Hiccup and Astrid laid in bed, aboslutely silent as thoughts ran through their head. They just stared at the ceiling, thinking and thinking until Hiccup finally spoke up.
"Astrid?" Hiccup asked, his voice just above a whisper. He fidgeted his hands, a sign of nervousness.
"Yes, Hiccup?" she answered.
"Um...okay...uh," he stuttered. Astrid just gave a weak laugh before Hiccup continued. "Okay," he breathed out slowly, fidgeting with his hands more before Astrid grabbed them and held them in her own. "I know we lost our first child, and honestly, I'm still heartbroken over it, but, maybe, if you want, we can try one more time. Just once. I just..."
Astrid didn't respond. Hiccup blinked away tears from his eyes as he continued to stare up at the ceiling, nervously waiting for Astrid's answer.
"Babe," she breathed. "I know what you mean, but I don't think I'm ready for this."
Hiccup's hopeful little smile slowly curved into a frown and he just stared down. "I understand."
"No," Astrid continued, "I don't think I'm ready, but I want to be. I want a child, and I'm willing to try one last time if you are."
Hiccup's frown immediately turned into a grin as he threw his arms around Astrid, hugging her close to him. She buried her head in his chest, and both of them laughed happily. "We can try again!" Hiccup exclaimed. "Thank you, Babe!"
"Shh, Hiccup; you're gonna wake Valka up!" Astrid laughed, her arms still wrapped around Hiccup. She looked up at him in awe. There was her dork being, well, a dork. She just loved him for that.
Hiccup soon pulled away, but he still held Astrid's hands. He breathed out a breath of relief. "Okay... so...when do you want to try again?"
A small smirk tugged at Astrid's lips. "How about now?"
