Something's Wrong

Astrid Hofferson had been acting very strange for the past couple of days, and her husband Hiccup was starting to get worried. Usually he'd wake up to his wife being nauseous and/or aching. Her feet had become quite swollen and for the time being, she was instructed to stay in bed and relax. But did she listen? No.

Hiccup had allowed Astrid to go outside every now and then, but he warned her to be careful that she didn't make herself even more sick than she was.

On a sunny Tuesday morning, Astrid was walking along with Ruffnut, Tuffnut, Fishlegs, and Snotlout. She had been wanting to catch up with the rest of the gang to see what kind of trouble they were getting into since she had been bedridden. Too bad Hiccup had to miss out due to his chiefing duties.

"So then, I caught the sheep with my bare hands and finally claimed my victory of actually catching one!" Tuff exclaimed. "Usually Fishlegs and Snotlout catch them first and give them all to Ruffnut. How pathetic," he whispered under his breath.

Snotlout heard Tuff's last comment and shoved him to the ground.

"Sore loser," Snotlout shot back.

"Actually, that would be you," Ruff pointed out.

"Oh babe, you know me so well."

Ruff groaned. She had had enough of Snotlout's annoying pick-up lines and flirting. There was no way she would ever hook up with him. Plus, she was interested in Eret, but Eret never really liked her back.

"So, Astrid," Fishlegs began. "How have you been? You seem to have been really sick lately."

"Oh, not really. It's probably the flu, that's all," Astrid dismissed with a wave of her hand, acting like the whole situation wasn't half as bad as it was. "I'll get over it soon."

Suddenly, Astrid felt a pang in her stomach, almost like a...kick?

"Ow," she whispered to herself; she didn't want anyone else to know she was hurting.

Then, a pounding headache hit her like a bludgen, and Astrid groaned in pain as she held her forehead.

"Astrid, you okay?" Ruff asked with genuine concern. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing. I'm-I'm fine," Astrid lied, rubbing her palm against her head to hopefully soothe the immense migraine. "My head's just hurting."

And then all she felt was nauseated, her stomach burning and she felt she might get sick at any moment. As her head began to spin, her vision became blurry and that resulted in an even bigger mirgraine than what she had moments before.

Suddenly, Astrid fell down to her knees, clutching her stomach while giving shrieks of agony. The gang rushed over to her, trying to fit all the pieces of her symptoms together; they had no idea what was going on.

"Hang in there, Astrid," Ruff said as she placed an arm around her friend's shoulders. "One of us will go find Gothi; she can help."

Tuff walked over, taking a place by his sister as he began to rub Astrid's back. He wasn't really sure what to do since he was never the sympathetic type, but he'd seen Hiccup do this to Astrid before. The action usually calmed her down.

"Agh!" Astrid screamed as she felt something sharp in her stomach again. She felt confused and so scared. She even thought that she could be dying.

In a matter of seconds, Astrid's eyes shut tight, and the chaos around her faded to black.

Astrid didn't know how long she was unconscious for, but finally her eyelids slowly opened, her crystal blue irises now visible. She immediately scanned the room she was in. She wasn't in her home...she was at Gothi's. But why? Then Astrid felt another kick-like motion in her stomach, and her heart skipped a beat. What was going on?

Gothi eventually came over, along with Ruff, Tuff, Snotlout, and Fishlegs, to tell Astrid the news. She wasn't expecting to hear what they told her, but nonetheless was excited about it. She wondered how Hiccup would take to it though.

Just as the gang was walking out of Gothi's hut, Hiccup landed on the wooden planks, quickly sliding off Toothless' back. His green eyes were wide and he seemed very tense.

"Where's Astrid? What happened to her?"

Everyone just kind of stared at each other.

Hiccup was told just minutes before of Astrid's passing out, and he was so scared and concerned that his body was shaking. He scolded himself for letting his wife leave their home. He knew he should have kept her inside where she wouldn't risk becoming any more sick than she was. Although, by the look on the gang's faces in front of him, the matter seemed even more important than Hiccup thought.

Tuff finally spoke up. "You might wanna take this one," he said as he patted Hiccup on the back. Hiccup just eyed the Vikings in front of him. What did they seem so shocked about? It was almost as if they weren't sure if they should tell him anything about the situation.

"Okay..." Hiccup spoke, still giving the gang a strange look. While they waited outside, Hiccup entered into the hut, searching for his wife.

"Astrid!" he exclaimed once he saw her. Hiccup immediately made his way over and wrapped his arms around her waist. Astrid flinched and calmly pushed Hiccup's hands away. He gave her an odd look.

"Astrid...what's wrong?"

She was silent for a moment before she answered.

"Hiccup, this is good news."

"Good news?!" Hiccup questioned aloud. "How is my wife collapsing on the ground and being unconscious for hours good news? Especially with your stomach pains and-"

"Babe, I'm pregnant."

Hiccup's mouth closed abruptly at her statement, uterrly shocked at Astrid's answer.

"You're-you're," he stuttered, peering down at Astrid's still flat stomach.

"You're going to be a father," Astrid said through a whisper, her voice soft she could barely speak. "We're having a baby."

Hiccup's concern flooded into excitement in an instant, a grin spreading across his now delighted face.

"I'm going to be a father!"

"And I'm going to be a mother!"

Hiccup wrapped his arms around Astrid's shoulders, his eyes welling with tears. He had been waiting for this moment. This was his chance to be the father he didn't have since Drago had killed Stoick years back. Now Hiccup had an opportunity to show a fatherly love to someone; now he was about to be a dad.

"I love you so much, M'lady," Hiccup said as he stroked Astrid's hair. He choked on his tears as Astrid pushed him away to stare into his eyes.

"Hiccup, your father would be so proud of you."

Hiccup smiled, a few more tears dripping down his cheeks.

"He would be proud of us both," he replied, rubbing a hand on Astrid's stomach. "And he would be proud of the little one we have coming."

And in only a matter of months, the two Haddocks would be parents to another Haddock in their family. Valka was sure to be as excited as they were, but Hiccup was so happy that he cried. This was his chance to be a father, and to have another person in his life to love, and he couldn't be more excited.

Btw, Hiccup and Astrid are around twenty five in this since httyd 3 doesn't come out until 2017. So I imagine they will be engaged by then (I hope), and I just thought they'd wait two years before they had a kid so...
