Sea Foam

3rd person pov
During class Nagisa kept stealing glances over at Karma who was just looking out the window, his chin on his palm.

The two of them have been friends for over a year now, so when Nagisa confused his love to Karma he wasn't surprised that he rejected him.
Karma valued their friendship and didn't want things to get weird between them.

However Nagisa knew his time was running out, his heart was turning to stone.
He knew this.
He knew that the moment he got out of the sea the person he loved would need to love him back in order for him to live.

He just never expected to fall in love.

Although Karma knew Nagisa was a mermaid, Nagisa never told him the truth.
Nagisa didn't want to force Karma to love him, he wanted him to love him on his own.
But now that he knew Karma would never love him, he was prepared to die and enjoy his last days with his friends.

Karma pov
Once school was over I walked up to Nagisa
"Want to watch the new Sonic Ninja movie?"
Nagisa quickly snapped his head to look at me once he heard what I said
"Sure!"
I was glad to see Nagisa still smiling even after I rejected him
I just didn't want to ruin our friendship

Once the movie was over we took a little walk around the park
"...."
I looked over at Nagisa and noticed that he seemed a little tired
"Karma I-"
"There's an ice cream stand!" I interrupted hoping that ice cream would cheer him up
"..."
"Wait right here" I said, sitting him down on a bench and leaving to get him a cone

When I came back I saw him clenching his chest
"Nagisa!" I ran over to him dropping the cones
"Nagisa what's wrong?!" I asked in a panic
He was breathing heavily and kept clenching his chest in pain
"Do you need to get in water!?"
All of a sudden he grabbed my arm and looked me in the eye
"I'm fine, don't worry" he smiled weakly
"..."
Although I didn't believe him I let it go.
I didn't want to force anything out of him.

Since that incident at the park I noticed how much Nagisa has changed.
He ate less and got weaker each day.
He looked so miserable.

During lunch the two of us sat underneath the tree we normally eat under.
"Nagisa I'm worried"
"What do you mean?" He asked
"You're not eating!"
He only smiled
"I just haven't been hungry"
"You're not ok Nagisa"
"Sorry to worry you Karma, but I'm fine"

The next day Nagisa didn't come to school and I panicked.

Nagisa lied
He said he was fine
He wasn't

I got out of my seat and walked out.

Once I was off of school grounds I started running to Nagisa's house.

When I got there I knocked on the door
"Nagisa! Nagisa!"
"...."
He didn't answer
Where is he!?
Did he leave me!?
Did he go back home!?
I immediately made a run towards the beach.

When I got there I saw Nagisa standing infront of the waves.
"..."
All of a sudden he fell on his knees
"!!!!"
He was holding his chest in pain like last time at the park
"Nagisa!"
I ran over to him and hugged him
"K-Karma!?"
"What's wrong!? Why are you in pain!?"
"...."
Nagisa looked at me with an emotionless look on his face before bring his hand to my cheek
"I'm sorry Karma, looks like I can't be by your side anymore"
"Nagisa?"

"When I came to land 4 years ago I was happy. I made friends and got to experience new things, but when you came in my life... I fell in love."
"..."
"I told myself I should not love because once in love you would need to love back in order for me to survive"
"So you're saying-"
"I'm dying"
"What do you mean you're dying!!" I yelled not fully understanding what he meant
"Once a mermaid falls in love with a human they have a time limit. The human must fall in love with them for them to survive and if not, the mermaid will die"
"You can't die Nagisa! I'll love you so don't die!"
Nagisa only smiled and wiped a tear that escaped my eye
"It's doesn't work like that. They need to be your true feelings"
"I'll love you! Just wait a bit longer!"
"I'm sorry Karma"
"Dammit Nagisa! Why didn't you tell me sooner!? Were you planning on just disappearing from my life and not telling me!"
"...There's nothing you could do now"
"I'm sorry Nagisa, if only I accepted your feelings" I said with more tears filling my eyes
"No, It's my fault for falling in love with you.
I tired to forget those feelings, but my heart couldn't. I'm sorry Karma, I didn't want to force you to love me"
"Nagisa...."
"Don't blame yourself"

That day I spent the whole afternoon looking at the sea with Nagisa in my arms.

With each passing minute Nagisa was growing weaker.
I wanted to be selfish and keep him by my side, but I also couldn't bare to see him like this....it was time to let him go.

"Karma will you help me" Nagisa whispered to me
"What is it"
"I don't have the energy to go...Will you take me?"
"...."
I took a deep breath and smiled painfully
"Ok"
I stood up with Nagisa in my arms and walked towards the sea

Once my feet were emerged in the water I continued to walk until the water was a little below my hips.
"What will happen to you?"
"...I'll disappear" he spoke gently and leaned his head on my chest
"...I'm Sorry Nagisa"
"It's ok" he smiled
I started to kneel down and once Nagisa touched the water he disappeared.
"..."
The only trace left behind was sea foam and the sea was calm again.
"Goodbye Nagisa"
