"How's your father Laurel?" Sojiro asked as he placed coffee in front of me and sat next to me. The cafe was quiet today. It was only Sojiro, an elderly couple and myself.
"Oh the usual. Keeping up him up to date with my school status, he actually was able to help me with my math homework. I tell you, despite being behind bars, it doesn faze him."
Sojiro chuckled at that. "You're dad's always been like that for as long as I can remember. I guess I'm lucky enough to have a friend like him. I take that back, he's lucky to have me as a friend."
"Why? Because you feed me curry and is constantly checking up on me?" I asked raising my eyebrow.
"That and I'm better looking than him. I don't know what your mom saw in him."
"Oh I dont know maybe charm, which my father says you lacked during your 2nd year in high school."
Sojiro gave me the side eye and we both laughed.
Sojiro has been like a second father to me even before my mom died. He's been close with my parents ever since they came back from America ato Japan. My parents lived in America for 5 years because that was one of their dreams they wanted to accomplish together in their marriage. They also wanted to have me born in the states so that one day if wanted a better education or different opportunity, America is my next option. Hence my name isn't your traditional Japanese name.
My mom and my aunt owned a store here in Yogen next to the supermarket where they made and sell Kimonos. I remember she would always have different ones for me every month to the point my dad had to cut her off for bringing them to our house. But of course that all started up again after my twin brother and sister were born Faye and Sidon.
The twins were not even a year when my mom was taken from us. It's been 7 years since she died.
Correction since she was murdered. And my father was accused of killing her 'according to eyewitness.'
Utter bullshit.
"Laurel? You okay." Sojiro asked waving a newspaper in my face.
"Sorry about that. I was just thinking about my mom."
"I'd hope your thinking about her in a good way. You know what it does to you when you...um think-" I waved my hand at him before he could finish.
"Sakura-San you don't have to worry about that happening again I'm okay I promise. Anyway to change the subject, how is she today?"
He sighed heavily "At least she ate her dinner last night. I got no response from her this morning though."
"She'll come around. Just be patient with her." I assured him with my smile. "
The tabloid news host from the television interrupted me with yet another subway accident.
"Oh. How frightening." The old man spoke from his booth.
"Another one?" I asked raising my eyebrow.
"What could be going on?" The elderly woman said.
"So what time is the boy on probation suppose be here?" I asked Sojiro
"Huh?" He looked at me confused.
I was gonna elaborate more when the bell hanging over the door went off and walked in a boy in a shujin academy uniform with shaggy black hair, glasses, and grey eyes walked in.
"Oh right...They did say that was today." He said getting up from his seat.
"We'll be going now the payments on the table." The old man said and he escorted his wife out the cafe.
