I nervously stretched after I pulled my hair into a messy bun. It's audition day. I sat down on the floor and looked at the hundreds of other thespians. I sat on the floor with my legs crossed going over the rehearsal dance and my song. I decided that Roxie would be the perfect song to audition as Val because of the sassiness both women have. I smiled at the girl sitting next to me. She was a black lady with her hair in pretty braids that she had pulled up into two different buns.
"Who are you auditioning for?" She had a mellifluous voice that had such a clear tone.
"Val," I said nervously. She quirked a brow.
"You seem a bit shy for that role, but you do you. I want Cassie, but I probably won't get it." I cocked my head.
"Why do you say that?" She looked at me like I had twelve heads.
"You have no idea how hard it is to be a black person in musical theatre. Nothing but stereotypical roles like maids or slaves are given to us." She sighed then crossed her arms."That's unfair." She scoffed at that.
"Ya think?" We sat in silence for a minute.
"What's your name?" I turned my head back to her.
"Amelia. And yours?"
"Whitney." I held out my hand and we shook hands. I nervously bit my lip as her number was called."Break a leg." She smiled then went into the room. I took out my audition music and hummed it as I attempted to calm my nerves. This is one of my dream shows, and I will try my darnest to get this role. After about an hour, Whitney left the room and came and sat by me. I smiled at her and she grinned in response.
"It was great! I think I did well. You're just sweating buckets." I smiled nervously.
"I'm just a little nervous. This is a dream role for me." She patted my arm then hugged me."You'll be fine." My number was called then. Whitney gave me a thumbs up before I went into the room. I walked on stage and smiled at the people sitting in the front row. They opened my resume and glanced over it.
"What part are you auditioning for?" I smiled at them.
"Val." A bald man with a big grey beard that was braided. He also has on blocky black glasses.
"You understand that that role is predominately for a woman with blond hair? Not inky black hair like you've got?" My smile faltered a bit.
"Yes I understand that and I will gladly dye my hair or wear a wig if I were to land this part." He flicked his wrist and the audition song for the dance started.I kept a smile on my face as I did leaps, three point turns, kick ball changes, and an array of dances until the song was over. I heaved but smiled as I held my pose. The piano started playing "Roxie" and popped out of my pose as I began singing the song. A persona came over me as I became this character. Roxie loves attention and the limelight so I became that person. The music stopped and so did I. The director had his glasses on the table next to me. I smiled then picked up my things.
"Thank you. Thank you very much." I left the room and I was in and went over to Whitney. I smiled and sat next to her."They're doing cold readings in ten."
"Thank you ten." I exhaled then rested my head against the wall behind me.***
"The cast list will be posted soon. Thank you all and have a nice night." Whitney and I went to the dressing room along with a bunch of other girls. I pulled my shirt over my body and shrugged my leotard off as well. I was stark naked for a second before putting on a sports bra and black leggings then threw on a navy blue shirt.
"I hope you get it Amelia. I gotta go but I'll catch you later." I waved at her then walked outside. Cassius was waiting outside outside leaned against his car. I smiled automatically when I saw him.
