21. abusive parents

Happy Eid Mubarak to my Muslim readers out there. And happy Pride month to all my LGBT+ readers. Hope you all are having a lovely day if you are celebrating and, even if you aren't, I hope you all are having a good time.

So, today we'll be talking about abusive parents because there is a surprising amount of cliches centred around them for some reason. Without further ado, let's get to it. Also, I won't be touching on sexual abuse because it makes me really, really uncomfortable but I will leave links below if you're interested.

Some of the content may be disturbing to readers.

THE ABUSIVE SINGLE PARENT;

There are various reasons for a parent abusing their child and none of them excuses their actions. Some authors, however, are determined to make the abusive parents in their stories so evil for the most basic of reasons.

One of the many motives for parental abuse in books is that the other parent died and so the living parent takes out their anger on the child.

Why? Just why? It's just so cliche and overdone and ridiculous. The death of a significant other is traumatic and, yes, it can push someone to abuse their child; but every single person who has lost a loved one doesn't resort to abusing others around them. If everyone did that, we'd all be abused and abusers at the same time.

If they aren't abusive, they're never there.

Workaholics and absentee parents are surprisingly common (hell, my own father was one) so I don't have that much of an issue with them being in a story. Still, I don't think a workaholic is going to miss their child's birthday in favour of work (unless they are really, really low on cash) and not every single absentee parent forgets when their child's birthday is.
