That night Renjun lay awake in his bed, unable to sleep. He knew he should close his eyes and at least try and get some rest so he didn't look like a zombie for his first day of school, but the thought of the ghost still played on his mind.
It may have just been a dream but it had felt so real.
In a strange way he kinda wanted to see the ghost again just to confirm he hadn't completely lost his mind. Renjun had a pretty good imagination, but he'd never thought up something like that before.
With a groan he throws his bedsheets off his body, his feet hitting the cold floor as he walks closer to his closet. He stops in front of it, keeping a decent distance if he had to suddenly run the opposite way.
He takes a deep breath before reaching his hand out and quickly pulling the closet door open, his hands flying to his face to cover his eyes.
But there was nothing.
Slowly, he lets his hands drop back down at his sides, sighing a little. Of all the places a ghost could be hiding, Renjun was almost sure they would be in the closet. With an unsatisfied groan he turns back around, yelping a little when he's met with a face.
His back hits the closet door and his hands begin to tremble ever so slightly.
"Were you looking for me?" The ghost asks, smirking as he inches closer to Renjun.
So he was real. Renjun wasn't going completely mad. In a strange way he was relived.
"S-so you're real?" The boy breathes, his shaky hand reaching out and touching the ghosts arm ever so slightly.
"Damn, I guess you're doing the touching now" the ghost laughs, what was his name again? Jeno? Sounded familiar enough.
Renjun was to shocked to respond, still not 100% this wasn't all a dream. "You're real! I'm not mad!" Renjun beams, a slight smile coming to his face. Weirdly enough he looked like he had frightened the ghost a little which was rather ironic.
"You sound pretty mad" Jeno mutters, pulling a face and taking a step back. "Are you not scared?"
"Not really" Renjun shrugs although it was a lie, he was still a little frightened but the ghost didn't seem to be that scary or threatening. "Are you going to hurt me?"
The ghost thinks for a moment before bursting into laughter "No, but I'm supposed to be scaring you out of this house and it doesn't seem to be working" he slouches a little before disappearing from sight.
Renjun spins around, his eyes scanning for any signs of the ghost. The brunette seemed surprised although he didn't know why. It was a ghost, ghosts weren't supposed to be seen anyway.
"Boo!" A voice yells causing Renjun to let out a small scream, tripping and falling backwards onto the hard wooden floor with a groan. "Did it work? Are you scared? Can you and your family leave this house now?"
Renjun forces himself back up to his feet, rubbing his hip where it had smacked against the floor "I mean I was startled but I'm not scared, and no I can't move out of this house" he mutters, limping over to his bed and sitting down on the edge.
"What?! Why not?" Jeno asks in disappointment, sitting next to Renjun on the bed only for the brunette to shuffle away, not liking the chill that the ghost gave off.
He sighs, looking over at Jeno "because I already begged my parents to move out but they refused, trust me I don't want to be here just as much as you don't want me here"
The ghost was silent for a moment before his eyes narrow "why? What's wrong with my house?"
"Well other than the fact it's haunted and smells like mould, there's nothing wrong with this house, I would just prefer to be back in China" he explains, not wanting to offend a ghost. Wait could Jeno posses him? Throw objects around the room at him? Renjun tried not to think about it.
"So you are Chinese!" He beams, shocking Renjun yet again "I knew your name didn't sound korean" he looked almost pleased at the fact he had correctly guessed Renjun's nationality.
"Yeah, um anyway I gotta sleep, I start school tomorrow. I just wanted to make sure you were real and I wasn't actually loosing my mind" Renjun crawls into the bed, pulling the sheets over himself.
Jeno stands, almost looking a little disappointed that their chat was over. "Oh, well if you ever need me just say my name, which is Jeno if you forgot" he offers a genuinely friendly smile which, for some strange reason, caused the edges of Renjun's lips to curl upwards ever so slightly.
"Goodnight Jeno" he mutters, laying down and rolling onto his side.
"Goodnight Renjun".
•••••
It had been so long since anyone had wished Jeno goodnight. He'd lived over one hundred years without even a small conversation. For some reason Renjun didn't seem to tremble and squirm in his presence.
All those years of being completely alone in this house, watching family after family move in and then move out, maybe now he could actually have a friend? Someone to acknowledge his presence and speak to at least.
Jeno watches as Renjun drifts off to sleep, hugging one of the white fluffy pillows close to his body. He looked so peaceful.
Usually, Jeno would take an opportunity like this to frighten the person to death, but he didn't feel like doing that. In face he didn't want to do that.
Maybe having Renjun and his parents living in his house wouldn't be so bad after all.
