" i remember the first time i made you laugh. i remember hearing your laugh, how genuine and full of happiness it was. after that, your laughter became my favorite sound.
reckon, we were only seven, but i just knew in that moment i would never get tired of you. my jokes weren't even funny but somehow they managed to make you laugh full heartedly and i don't think anyone had ever expressed so much joy.
fast forward 3 years, we were ten, in the fourth grade and i was struggling with math because god knows i suck at math.
our multiplication quiz was coming up and i was going to fail if it wasn't for you. you came over the day before our quiz and made sure those numbers were embedded into my brain, or you wouldn't leave.
you made it your personal mission to not let me be behind everyone in the class, knowing damn well that you were extremely advanced in math.
i struggled to get caught up that night but someway, somehow, you got me to remember and i passed my quiz. i felt like i would never be able to repay you but you said it was fine and that it was no trouble but i didn't believe you and i went out and got you some gummy bears because i remember you told me they were your favorite.
once again, fast forward to eighth grade, our winter formal was coming up and we were both without dates.
well, i was. you've had at least three different boys ask you to the dance and you had them all waiting for a response, which was no.
i remember, we were at my house watching dog judge when you blatantly asked me, "do you wanna go to the formal with me?".
i was dumbfounded because i couldn't believe you had asked me to go to the dance with you. we had sat there in silence for a few minutes before you spoke up again. "is that yes or what?" you asked.
"yes, of course. i mean, sure."
i was so excited that you had asked me but of course, me being me, i wasn't going to let you know that. not that i could get away with anything when i was with you.
the weekend to the winter formal rolled around and i was on my way to pick you up. on the way there i had stopped to buy you flowers.
daisies to be specific. i remember you told me once after i told you about my experience at flower camp the summer after seventh grade.
i knocked on your front door and your mom opened it, a wide, giddy smile on her face. tears began to brim her eyes as you came down the stairs. you wore this beautiful golden colored dress that fit you like a glove.
i handed you the daisies and you smiled. i remember complimenting you and you thanked me right before your mom began to take pictures of us.
after you convinced your mom to stop taking pictures of us, we began to head out the door when your mom pulled me back.
she told me, "take care of my little girl." and i smiled at her.
"always and forever."
we arrived at the school and there were groups of kids everywhere. we saw our friends standing by the punch bowl and you grabbed my hand and dragged me behind you.
after dancing for a few hours, you decided you needed fresh air and we headed outside.
we sat on a bench and you grabbed my hand, as we looked up at the sky, the wind rustling some leaves around.
you broke the silence, breaking me from my focus on the night sky.
"tonight has been really great." you said, a wide smile on your face.
"it really has."
"i'm glad you agreed to come with me, even though i asked you in a really lame way." you said as i lightly chuckled.
"of course, i'd come with you. i wouldn't have wanted it any other way." i replied, seeing how you began to nervously fidget.
"henry, i've been meaning to tell you something."
"what is it?"
your anxiousness was making me anxious.
"i really li-""
"hm, excuse me sir." the nurse poked her head into the doorway.
"i'm sorry but i'm going to have to ask you to leave. we need to run some tests and we feel like you should go home and get some rest." the nurse said, as henry's face fell.
"are you sure i can't stay for the night?" he asked, as he looked back at the girl laying on the bed.
"sir, not to mean any offense, but you've been here for the last 6 days. we understand you're going through a tough time, but your kids are also going through a tough time and we're positive they'd like to be with their father." the nurse spoke with a sympathetic tone.
henry nodded. "right, of course. i'll be back tomorrow, i suppose."
"of course, mr.hart, we'll be waiting for your arrival. you and your little ones." she smiled.
"all four?"
"all four."
"thank you again. it means a lot to my kids and i for how much you guys are doing to help my wife." henry said, as he began to rise from his seat.
"that's what we do, sir. we don't give up without a fight."
henry smiled before taking charlotte's hand in his and squeezing it lightly.
"neither does she."
