break up in a small town - sam hunt

the word devastated did not even begin to describe how hurt henry was when charlotte and him broke up. it wasn't anyone's fault that they broke up, it was a mutual understanding that they had separate hopes and dreams. in other words, it was inevitable.

so two weeks after their senior trip to colorado, the inevitable happened, charlotte and henry broke up in the school cafeteria.

when the news had made it around to the entire school, the whispers began. everyone was trying to figure out what had finally drifted the two apart. cheating rumors were the more common ones floating in the hallway.

most of those cheating rumors were along the lines that henry had been unfaithful to charlotte while on the colorado trip which was far from the truth. in fact, it was the total opposite.

the colorado trip was probably his favorite memory of theirs together. he taught her how to snowboard up in the mountains and she made him hot chocolate back at the hotel. they spent the entire trip together, including the ride there and back.

the first couple days of them being separated for the first time in a long time, it was hard.

neither of them spoke to each other, avoided their shared friend group, made sure to not be at the same place, and even made sure that they wouldn't leave the school at the same time.

after a while, things were becoming normal minus the fact that charlotte and henry hadn't been seen in a room together for over a two weeks.

their shared friends always made sure they didn't cross paths in order to avoid any awkwardness.

it was nice of them to try, but it was impossible to keep them from seeing each other when one of them was hanging out with their friends.

swellview was a small town, everyone knew everyone, everyone went to the same places, and everyone had the same favorite hangouts.

if charlotte was hanging out with their friends, henry would know because he would be able to see them through the windows of junk n' stuff as they laughed about some dumb joke their friend, lucas, would tell.

a month before graduation, henry found out that charlotte had a new boyfriend. it caught him off guard, to say the least.

they broke up in the middle of april, it was only the third week of may. what hurt even more was the fact that he seemed to be the only person in town to not know.

he knew she would move on, but it felt like it was too soon, especially because his heart still ached for her.

henry entered the gas station, heading straight for the candy aisle. he really wanted gummy bears and figured he'd put some gas in his car while he was there.

he walked towards the counter, setting the gummy bears down while the older lady smiled sadly at him. he didn't understand why, but he didn't question it.

"can i get $15 on number 5?" he asked, pulling out his wallet.

the cashier nodded as henry handed her the money.

he picked up his gummy bears off the counter and was about to walk away when the cashier, wendy, called out to him.

"how you holding up, sweetie? i heard about your ex-girlfriend." she asked, confusing him with her statement.

he hadn't heard anything about her in a long time.

"what do you mean?" he questioned, suddenly needing to know what she was talking about.
