Josie

The guy at the coffee shop called me and asked me out on a date. I agreed. We planned to meet at this bakery. It wasn't like the Gray Brother's bakery, but I figure it would have treats.

I walked in and found the guy waiting for me. That was a plus. The last thing I needed was to have someone stand me up. I walked over and took a seat at a table. He sat down across from me.

"I'm glad you accepted my date," he said.

"It was better than staying home and watching the same thing on Netflix," I replied as he smiled.

We started talking, and he told me about himself. As we sat there, he spoke about himself frequently. I waited for him to ask me questions about myself, but he didn't—this date is peculiar. I smiled and nodded. It was better than appearing as a whiny girl.

My mind drifted about what Lucille said. She said if a guy talks about himself and asks nothing about you, then drop him. He's a dud. I need to think about how to get out of this disastrous date.

I left the house telling no one where I'm going. Between Parker and Selena looking at each other with goo-goo eyes and Shaun talking to Pax on the phone, I felt like the fifth wheel.

I strolled around town, then went to find something to eat. I'm starving. I walked in and noticed Josie with that tool from the coffee shop. He seemed to do all the talking while she looked bored out of her mind from its looks.

I walked past them, over to the counter, and placed an order as he kept talking. Could this guy be any more annoying than he seemed?

"Here you go," someone said as they handed me my order. I turned and watched Josie and her date. The worker said, "That is the most pathetic date I've ever seen."

"How long have they been here?" I asked.

"About thirty minutes and the guy is the only one talking. He's not my type," he mentioned as I looked at him.

"What is your type?" I asked curiously.

"It's my husband." He smirked.

"Nice to know," I said and nodded.

"I'm Nik," he introduced himself.

"Payton," I introduced myself.

We went back to watching both of them. The guy kept rambling while the girl looks pained.

"That's a sad date. Someone should put an end to the girl's misery by putting him out of his," he commented.

"I couldn't agree more," I added.

I did just that. It was time to rescue the girl from a horrible decision. Walking over, I announced my presence.

"Good morning," I greeted them. The guy quit talking. Josie looked like a deer caught in headlights. "I couldn't help but notice you're on a date."

"Yeah, and it would be great if you left," he said.

"Oh, I would if I could, but I can't. See, you are a self-absorbed tool that talks about yourself. Your date, who is hot," I said as I noticed Josie's cheeks turn pink, "seems bored out of her mind."

"Excuse me," the guy said.

"I didn't stutter, so I'm going to rescue her and save you the hassle of never having her call you ever again," I mentioned as I held out my hand and she took it. "Excuse us," I said. We left the bakery, leaving her date confused. I told you the guy's a tool.

Josie

I can't believe Payton's holding my hand. It felt warm and soft to me. Then, I remembered he couldn't care less about me. As soon as we were outside, I pulled my hand away.

"Do you mind?" I asked.

"Do I mind? I rescued you from a disaster waiting to happen," he answered.

"No, you wanted to look like the good guy who rescues the damsel in distress. You're not a good guy," I told him.

His expression changed, and he furrowed his brows.

"Thanks for ruing my date," I snapped. I turned and walked away, leaving Payton standing there with his food and coffee. I refused to allow Payton to invade my life when he didn't bother to notice me.

People may think I'm ungrateful, but when a guy screws up your name and doesn't notice you when you try to get his attention, you remember that. As I walked around contemplating my lousy luck with guys, someone caught up with me.

Payton stopped me. "You know, I'm trying to help you and getting flack. You could be a little appreciative of it," he told me.

"That's a little self-absorb, don't you think?" I asked as I crossed my arms.

"How is that self-absorbed? I helped you, and you treat me like I'm an asshole," he remarked.

"Because you are," I informed him.

"Excuse me," he said.

"No, I won't excuse you. Payton Gray thinks he's God's gift to women but messes up their names and is indifferent to them when they show interest. Newsflash that doesn't make you great; it makes you a tool," I said as I walked away from him. I'm done with this conversation and treated differently, just because I look different.

It shouldn't matter how I look, but it does. That bothered me.

Payton

Have you ever met someone that drove you nuts? I did, and it sucked. You try to help someone, and they act like it's a burden. What was with this chick? I could have any girl, but this one was giving me a hassle. Before, she would try to talk to me. Now, it's like pulling teeth.

I walked back to the house, feeling irritated. I don't know what changed with Josie, but she went from a nice girl to someone different. Then I thought about how she looked. Why did she change her looks? There was nothing wrong with her glasses or style. She's pretty just the way she is.

If I'm not preoccupied with my parents on my back about my life, I would have asked her out. That boggled my mind that I was thinking about her more than I did.

I walked into the house, and Parker asked, "Why do you look like you lost your best friend?"

I rolled my eyes at him. "I went to a bakery and ran into Josie," I said.

"No shit," he commented sarcastically.

I gave him another look. I should have known better than to say something.

"Did you call her the wrong name again?" He asked.

"No, I saved her from a horrible date," I answered.

"Was it horrible because it was someone else or the fact that you blew it?" He questioned me.

"I'm done with this conversation," I replied as I walked past him.

"Well, when you realize what a king-size tool you are, you know where to find me, brother," he yelled to me.

The last thing I needed to deal with is Parker and his wisecracks. I needed to figure out how to persuade Josie that I'm not a bad guy. It's easier said than done.
