Matthew

I finished breakfast and took a drive. It's what I did when I felt things were too much. I pulled into a cemetery and drove down one road until I came to a spot. I got out of the car and walked over to the snow cover ground, crouching down as I brush the snow away with my glove.

I looked at the headstone, which read:

Sadie Langford

Loving daughter, flying with the Angels

Sadie flew with the angels along with my heart. I put flowers into the cup holder, which were her favorite flower Lilies. I stood up and looked at her headstone, thinking about that day. I thought about that day every day. She would turn twenty-two, and we would be in college together, then married with kids.

We had so many plans, and one day, it vanished. I wiped my eyes and turned to leave when I saw Ma standing there. I walked up to her.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"I came to check on you and knew you would be here," Ma told me.

I looked at her.

"Matthew, it's not your fault. You can't save the person if they don't want to have someone save them," Ma reasoned.

"I can't? Because I'm sure that I should have seen the signs. When you love someone, you protect them. I didn't even do that," I snapped, which I hated doing with my ma.

"You're like your father in that aspect. He wants to save his loved ones and protect them. I learned it's not always possible, especially when they're sick," Ma explained.

"It's not fair," I said as tears fell, and Ma gave me a comforting hug. I pulled back. "I'm sorry I snapped at you."

"It's okay, Matthew. It's the anger and grief, but don't let it consume you," Ma said as I nodded.

We stayed awhile, visiting Sadie, then we left. I drove back to school and went back to my life, one that didn't include Sadie.

Britt

I heard a knock at my door and opened it to see my sister standing there.

"Hey, college girl, who thinks she's too good to say hi. My name is Britt, and I'm in college," Nora mocked as she flipped her hair.

"You're such a dork," I laughed.

"Yeah, but I'm fun, and you missed me," Nora said with a cheesy grin. I hugged her, and she hugged me back, then she walked into the room and set her bag down.

"It's not bad. At least, it's not a dump," Nora mentioned as I shook my head.

"Why are you here?" I asked.

"I thought I would check out the college since they accepted me. Plus, Mom and Dad need a break," Nora told me as I chuckled.

"Well, let's go to the bakery. You can meet Shaun; then I will introduce you to Pat's family," I said.

"Oh, you mean, mopey?" Nora asked.

"Pat isn't mopey. It's hard being away from someone you like," I answered.

"Well, considering he's mopey and you're dopey, you two belong together," Nora retorted as I rolled my eyes. My baby sister is something else.

We left the dorm room and went to the bakery. We walked inside and over to the counter as I introduced Shaun to Nora. Nora went to shake his hand. Shaun refused, shoving his hands into his pockets. I ordered for us before she questioned things.
