Payton
Did you ever do something that you regret? That's my regret now when I made that call.
"Payton!" Parker yelled as I stood there, regretting my poor life choices of late. One option would call certain people. "Payton, get your stupid ass down here!" I heard him yell again.
I came downstairs to find my uncles and aunts standing there. What in the world?
Parker walked over to me. "Would you mind telling me why the hell you called them?" He pointed at our family.
"Better question, what the hell is wrong with you? Can't you bother to help your tool of a brother out?" Nixon asked Parker as he gave me that look. You know the one. It's the look that says I'm going to beat your ass. That would be the look.
I walked past Parker and over to my family as they all stood there, including grandpa.
"Is there a reason pops didn't come?" I asked them.
"He wanted us to keep him out of it. I always knew our brother was a royal twit," Larkin added.
                              "No argument there," Lyric added.
                              "Where's Aunt Lakin?" I asked.
"Her kid got suspended for outing some banshees," Luna answered, looking confused.
"I don't want to know," I said, shaking my head.
"Stay here. We'll be back. You girls keep him from leaving," Nixon told them. They nodded as he left with our other uncles. Grandpa stayed.
"You're not going?" I asked him.
"I'm too old for this shit," he said as he walked over and sat down on the couch. "I've already been through this countless times, including with your aunts."
"In our defense, you raised us," Larkin retorted.
"You don't have a defense or any defense for the matter. The crazy gene crashed into you," he replied as I stood there while Parker shot me daggers.
The door opened and in walked Selena. She looked at everyone. "Do I want to know?" She asked.
"My tool of a brother called our grandpa, who talked to our uncles, then he called our crazy aunts," Parker told her.
"Oh, so it's a typical day with everyone." She shrugged.
Parker rolled his eyes and walked over, sitting down next to grandpa. I had a feeling that this would not end well.
                              Josie
I was reading a book when there was a knock at my door. I got up and answered it to find four men standing there.
"Who are you?" I asked them.
"We're the Gray Brothers minus a brother because he's too old, apparently," one guy grumbled.
"Ignore Nix, he's pissy because big brother sat this out," another guy said.
"We'll get to the point. We came to kidnap you and help Payton out," a different guy said.
"First, I'm Noah, and this is Nixon, Nathan, and Nolan," Noah introduced them. The other three guys waved. "Now that you know who we are, it's time to kidnap you." He smiled.
"Kidnapping is a criminal offense, and you can go to jail for it," I informed them.
"We haven't yet," Nixon mentioned as I looked at them strangely. Who the hell kidnaps someone and enjoys it? They do.
"You can save your energy because you're old," I told them as they looked at me offended.
"Excuse me; I'll have you know we are not that old. Now Grammy was old. Ma and dad are becoming ancient, but we aren't old," Nixon retorted.
"Are you sure about that? You sound like the guy that yells at kids for walking across their lawn," I remarked with a look. He glared at me.
"They deserved it. Kids never listen," he replied.
"Dude, you're proving her point," Nathan told Nixon. Nixon looked at him, then at me, and gave me a look.
I turned and walked over to my bed as they entered my room. I sat down on the edge of the bed.
"I'm going to save you time and kidnapping charges. I'm not going. Why go see someone who never gave you the time of day and decides to now?" I asked them.
"Payton's not the sharpest tool in the box," Nixon said as I looked at him.
"The boy couldn't even decide what he wanted to do with his life, just like his grandpappy," Nathan added.
"How he ever dated is beyond us," Noah told me.
                              "Yep," Nolan nodded in agreement.
"Were you ever called the wrong name or treated like you don't exist?" I asked them.
"We weren't, but our sister Maggie was," Nolan said as I looked at him. "She liked this tool, and he couldn't see her for the dust. Luckily for her, our brother Nash saw her for more when he wasn't a tool himself."
                              I looked at him, confused.
"What asinine is trying to say," Nixon said while rolling his eyes, "is that we have a family that has the tool gene."
"How is that asinine? I thought I was clear," Nolan told him.
"This clarity comes from someone who not only tipped the elbow but landed in jail," Nathan reminded him.
"You landed in jail too. Do you remember Hawaii?" Nolan asked Nathan.
"Will you two idiots shut up? We're here to help our hapless nephew get a girl," Nixon told them as they rolled their eyes.
"Look, I know you grandpas are trying to help," I said as I noticed their expressions change to annoyance. "But Payton wouldn't have even noticed me if it wasn't for me changing my look. Why do I want a guy that only sees me because of changing my appearance?"
They looked at each other, then at me. No matter what happened, I refused to allow some guy sweet talk to me, even if he sent his crazy family to visit me.
                              Payton
"Did anyone tell you that you're the damn dumbest person who walked the face of the earth?" Larkin asked me.
                              "Excuse me," I answered.
"What she means is, you can't expect a girl to like her when you treated her like crap," Lyric clarified.
"No, I meant what I said," Larkin corrected her.
"People do make mistakes," Luna reminded them.
"You should know, queen of mistakes," Larkin retorted. Then they started arguing. I rubbed my temple. They weren't helping.
Grandpa sat there, scrolling through his phone while I tried to figure out what to do. Thirty minutes later, my uncles came in without Josie.
"You're on your own," Nixon told me as he sat down next to grandpa.
The other uncles broke up the arguing with the aunts.
"So much for the help," I mumbled.
"You need to fix this," we heard someone say, and all turned to look at grandpa as he looked at me.
                              "Huh?" I asked.
"Payton, we all make mistakes with the people in our lives, but it's our job to correct them," Grandpa answered.
"How do I get a girl to give me a chance when I practically ignored her because of my issues?" I asked him.
"Be honest," he answered as I looked at him. "Don't play games or lie, but be honest with Josie. It was something I learned with your grandmother."
I looked at him and nodded.
"Now, if my brothers and daughters finished helping, I'm going home to see my wife," he said as he got up and walked to the door. They followed him as they all left.
I stood there, thinking about what he said.
"The visits I like, short and sweet," Park mentioned as I looked at him. He smiled, then went into the kitchen. Maybe it was time for honesty with Josie.
