Payton
The next day, I went to find Josie and found her talking to a guy. She laughed with him. I thought about turning around, but I'm a Gray and refuse to let this beat me.
I walked over to her as they talked.
"Excuse me," I said as I took her hand and dragged her away.
"Payton!" She yelled.
"We need to talk," I told her as I led her away.
I dragged her to a more private area so that we could talk without interruption. I released her from my grip, and she stood there.
"Why?" She asked me. I looked at her. "Why do you keep doing this?" She asked as she walked towards me, then she started pushing me. "Why, Payton? Why can't you leave me alone?" She yelled as she pushed me.
I stepped back as she kept pushing me.
"Do you think this is fair? Do you think it's right to play with my feelings? It's not fair! You're not fair," she yelled as she kept pushing me as I took it. Then she started hitting my chest as she yelled at me.
I finally wrapped my arms around her as she fought until she stopped fighting and started crying.
She buried her head into my chest. "I hate you, Payton Gray," she mumbled.
"No, you don't. You're upset," I said as Josie moved her head, agreeing with me. "You're upset because you liked me, but didn't think I saw you for dust, which isn't true."
She lifted her head and furrowed her brows.
I sighed and released her. "I saw you, but I was dealing with my life, and being in a relationship wasn't happening," I told her.
She looked at me. I turned and started pacing.
"How can you be with someone if you don't even know where your life is going?" I asked. "I had my family on my back and felt clueless about my future."
She wiped her eyes as she watched me.
"Then this girl walks into the bakery one day with glasses and a ponytail and says hi to me," I said as I stopped and looked at her. "She was this sweet and friendly person. She drew people to her engaging with strangers without strings attached. As much as I wanted to talk to her, I knew with the way my life is, I didn't want to drag her down with it."
We looked at each other.
"That's bullshit," she said.
"Excuse me?" I asked her.
"Payton, that's bullshit, and you know it. You knew who I was from school and didn't bother to acknowledge me even when I said hi to you and Parker," she told me.
I looked at her as I furrowed my brows. She walked towards me.
"Why don't for once in your stupid life be honest and admit you're a king-size tool?" She asked me.
"I am not a tool," I replied.
"Oh, you're a tool, all right. You hand me a bullshit story, hoping I buy it, which I don't. If it weren't for changing my looks, you wouldn't have bothered me. I don't want someone like that in my life. Do me a favor and leave me alone," she said as she turned and walked away, leaving me standing there.
I was getting highly irritated with her. I walked back to the house and entered as Parker looked up from his phone while sitting on the couch.
"Where have you been?" He asked.
"I went to talk to Josie," I answered as I walked over to the couch and sat next to him.
"How did that go?" He asked me.
"Miserable," I replied.
"Did you hand her some bullshit story like you usually do?" He asked me as I looked at him, and he shook his head. "Yep, you did. What the hell is wrong with you, Pay?"
"It wasn't bullshit," I denied.
"Right, and I'm the Easter Bunny." Parker rolled his eyes. "You're the king of bullshit. How many girls did you use the line about seeing them come into the bakery?" He asked me as I gave him a look.
"Payton, you met Josie in school when she attempted to talk to you, and you blew her off. The poor girl has liked you forever, and you intentionally were a tool to her. Get it together and stop being a tool," he ordered me as he got up and left the room.
I sat there and thought about it, then saw someone. I left and drove to that person's house, which was an hour from campus. I pulled into their driveway and got out. I walked up to the door and knocked as Kaiden answered it.
"Payton?" He looked at me, confused.
"I need some advice Kaiden," I said as he waved me in.
I walked in and saw Greg, who greeted me. We went into the kitchen and sat down at the table as Greg got us something to drink.
"What's up?" Kaiden asked me.
"I'm having an issue," I said.
"Is it a chick?" He asked.
"Unfortunately," I signed.
Greg walked over and set coffee cups in front of us, then joined us.
"Don't tell me you were a tool to her," he said as I looked at him and he shook his head. "Payton, this idea you have with women needs to change. Grays are notorious for the one thing Grays is faithful even to the wrong people," he mentioned as he referred to the guy he was with before Greg.
Greg reaches over and takes Kaiden's hand, offering comfort. It's a difficult thing for Kaiden to remember. Pops explained what happened when we got older.
"I've never met a girl who was this difficult. I had no issue with girls before Josie," I told him.
"Because Josie isn't those girls," he reminded me. "She won't fall at your feet because you turn on the charm. Payton, you crushed this girl," he said.
"Have you been talking to pops?" I asked.
"No," he answered. I sighed. "Lex told Kain, and Kain told me," he added with a smile.
"Figures," I said.
"My advice, stop being a tool and be genuine. Don't use some asinine line on Josie and try. After what you put this girl through, she deserves that much," he reasoned as I looked at him.
This situation would be easier said than done. How is it I can advise other people and help them, but I can't help myself? Then I realized one important detail I was overlooking. It's not about me. I crushed a girl because I had the power to do so and didn't know the tables would turn on me.
It was time to right a wrong.
