Josie
Classes started, and I couldn't wait. I've dreamed of going to college since I started high school. I wanted to work at a publishing company when I graduated. I sat in class, and a guy sat down next to me. I glanced at him, and he smiled at me. I smiled back.
Throughout the class, I noticed the guy smile at me. At first, it was nice, but now it was creeping me out. When class ended, I got up and walked to the doorway. I started walking to my next level when someone caught up with me.
"Excuse me," the guy from class said. I looked at him. "I didn't get your name."
"I didn't," I said when someone interrupted us.
"Jodie! There you are!" Parker exclaimed as I looked at him. Jodie?
"Who are you?" The guy asked Parker.
"I'm her fiancé, and she's pregnant with my kids' litter," he replied as my eyes widened and mouth became agape. "Let's move along, shall we?" He asked me as he escorted me away. He leaned in and whispered, "Follow my lead." I nodded as we walked until we were out of view of the creepy guy.
Parker stopped, and I looked at him.
"Jodie?" I asked him.
"It's better than giving him your actual name. Not everyone's intentions are good," he told me.
"I see that a lot," I sighed.
"Josie, what are you doing?" He asked me.
"I'm making poor choices with dating. First, I have a crush on your brother, who can't see me for dust until I change my look. Next, I go on a date with a guy who talked about himself. Finally, I got a creepy guy eyeing me," I said.
"Did you ever think you're trying too hard?" He asked me.
"What do you mean?" I asked, furrowing my brows.
"Get rid of the makeup, contacts, and clothes. That is not you. Be yourself, and the right guy will come along," he mentioned as I looked at him. "I have to go to meet Selena," Parker advised and walked away as I looked at myself.
I went back to my dorm room and did what he suggested. I showered and changed, then put my hair into a ponytail and put on my glasses. I finally felt like myself.
Britt walked into the room.
"Whoa, welcome back, old friend," she said as I smiled at her.
"It's not terrible, is it?" I asked her.
"No, it's you. That other look wasn't you, and neither was the attitude," Britt said.
"Yeah, I see that," I sighed.
"What about Payton?" Britt asked me. I looked at her. "Isn't the whole reason for changing your look is to get Payton's attention?"
"Yeah, but it was for the wrong reasons. I would rather people like me for me than for someone I'm not," I reasoned.
"It's always better to be yourself," Britt agreed.
It didn't matter anymore if I got Payton's attention. I prefer the old one.
The next day, the creepy guy sat somewhere else, thank God. I didn't feel like having to fend him off. Classes were okay, and I got a coffee. I stood in line and saw the guy I went out with on a date.
When I got to the front, I said hi. The guy looked at me, weird.
"Do I know you?" He asked.
"It's Josie. We went out on a date at a bakery," I mentioned.
"That is doubtful. The girl I went out with was hot, and well, you're not," he told me. "Now, if you don't mind, I have hot chicks to wait on," he adds.
I stood there embarrassed as he gave me an annoyed look. I moved out of the line and went to a different one where the next person wasn't any better. They were just as rude. I got my coffee as a group of people stopped me on my way out and started hassling me.
"Move, geek," one guy said.
"Damn, you're hideous," a girl laughed.
Someone dumped their drink on me. "Oops, my bad," the person snickered.
I said nothing but left as I ran into Parker and Payton. That is such my luck today.
"Josie?" Parker said as he furrowed his brows at me.
"Oh, hey, Parker. Payton. I am such a klutz and spilled my drink on me," I lied as they looked at me. Payton looked at me seriously. "I'm going home to get cleaned up. I need to be more careful the next time," I said, trying to save face.
I walked away, so they didn't see me cry. I wiped my eyes as I walked. It reminds me of high school all over again. Britt was my only friend, and Parker was always lovely to me. I guess the same will happen in college. That's okay because I'm used to it.
Payton
"You know she's lying, right?" Park said to me.
I said nothing but walked into the coffee shop to find a group of people laughing about what they did. I walked over and tapped a guy. He turned, and I hit him as another guy stood up. Parker knocked his ass out.
"Who do you think you are?" A girl asked in a snotty tone.
"We're the Gray brothers, sweetheart, and we have no issue righting a wrong," Parker snapped as she stared at us.
"Leave Josie Mitchell alone," I warned everyone as I turned and left the coffeehouse with Parker following me.
"I'm going to take a wild guess that you like this girl," Parker mentioned.
I looked at him as he looked at me.
"No one deserves to have people treat them like that, not even me," I told him as I walked away.
"It's about damn time," Parker chuckled as he ran after me.
Josie
I got to my dorm room and took a shower. I washed up and changed my clothes. I went down to the bakery to get a cupcake. I walked in and over to the counter as a guy greeted me, "Welcome to Kate and Frazier's Sweet Treats. What can I get you?"
"A new life," I mumbled.
"Excuse me?" He asked.
"Nothing, can I have a red velvet cupcake, please, and a coffee?" I asked the guy.
"Sure," he smiled as he went to get my order. I went to pull out some money and realized I forgot my wallet. He rang me up as I stood there.
"That will be four dollars," he said.
"I forgot my wallet. Sorry for wasting your time," I said as I turned to walk away when someone held up a five-dollar bill.
"This should cover it and keep the change," Payton said as he paid for my stuff.
"You're all set," the guy said as I took my cupcake and coffee.
"I'll pay you back," I assured him.
"Don't worry about it," he said.
"Well, I'm going to go," I said as I maneuvered around him. I didn't want him to think I was expecting anything.
"Josie?" I heard him say as I stopped and winced. I gain my composure as I turned to face him. "Do you want to talk?"
"I don't want to keep you," I said as I looked at him.
"You're not keeping me," he said as he smiled slightly.
"Okay," I said as we walked over and sat down at a table. I ate my cupcake and drank my coffee as we talked. I need to remember it's just talking. Payton would never like me in that way.
