I sighed slowly as the sun went down, taking in my surroundings. I don't remember how I got here exactly, but by the looks of the bloodstains on the carpet it's not somewhere I want to be. I jumped as a voice sounded from behind me.

"So, this is the great Shard Sneider."

A man's voice. I could pick out his shadow, but only just. The sun had sunk, but tonight was a new moon, making it difficult for even me to see. He snickered.

"You really are a freak aren't you?"

I smiled, finally recognizing the voice. He was the leader of the Bone Gang. They're not that well known, I made sure of that. I do not allow scum like them in my town to cause trouble. That's my job.

"So, what drug did they use on you hmm? Or did your idiot of a father make you this way on purpose?"

A dim light flicked on, he was holding an axe. Aw, he wants to fight me? How cute.

I relaxed, this guy was all talk. He thinks killing a few street rats makes him bad. I've wiped out half his gang in two days. Pity, some of them hadn't even learned to fight yet, they were too easy.

He droned on, badmouthing my family that he knew nothing about. Enough. I pulled out my pocketknife, and before he could even protest I was holding it to his throat.

"Sorry, you were boring me." I finished the job and crept downstairs. There were seven of his gang members left. I slid out a nearby window, not really wanting to deal with them now. I grinned as I heard a blood-curdling scream coming from the building, they must have found the body.

Eventually I made my way home, glancing at the Waters' house. I hardly see the parents lately, but the kids are out sometimes. Allie and Something. Never got around to finding out their names, government kids. Well, technically I was a government kid before my dad disappeared looking for 'The Ship'. I wonder if he ever found it sometimes, but I doubt it's even real. Before he left he said it's so we can 'survive', but he never told me much else. He told me we would survive, and now he's probably dead.

I never knew my mom, she died in childbirth. She had tried to have twins with some medicine, but whoever she got it from was a liar. No, instead of twins she had me, a useless freak that cost her, her life.

I glanced in the mirror as I walked in the empty house, reminding me of just how freakish I looked. Jet black hair, held up with two large ponytails. Unlike normal people, my hair never stops growing, when it should stop at my waist. I've been meaning to cut it short, but I never got around to it.

I blinked, looking into my bright red eyes. Sometimes I really disgusted myself. I was too, different, with the features like an anime character, unrealistic. But what could I do? I would never get plastic surgery, period.

Well I guess it's not all bad, I smiled. I enjoyed the way people were scared of me, it made them leave me alone. And the mutation makes me stronger and faster than full grown men.

I stepped into my room, glancing at the picture of my dad. He left me when I was twelve. That's six years he's been gone now, he's not coming back.

I lit a cigarette and looked out the window. He had been a good father when he was here, which wasn't often because of his job, whatever it was. But oh well, no use dwelling on it.

Taking a cold shower and throwing on an old nightgown of my mother's, I fell asleep.
