I was so happy to get back to school it was ridiculous. So many days of sitting alone with my thoughts… New Year’s was a bust. I ended up saying screw it to my plan and left the party as soon as midnight hit. Everyone looked so happy… and I was just kinda… there. I hate it. I hate them. They act just as they did on Earth. I hope Novelta will... make them better, but I kinda doubt it.
I’m sitting in Basic Survival right now, zoning out, in my angry thoughts. We’re not doing too much today, just a quiz. We switched seats too, but I still sit next to Ridge. He looks as bored as I feel right now. A kid next to him mumbles something about astronomy. Ridge goes on to explain that they got to see Novelta today. When he’s done I decide to ask “What’s it look like?” He looks surprised that I spoke, but then he explained to me about the planet. It sounds cool actually, but then I remember he’s Mr. Waters’ son, and I go back to my angry thoughts. It’s not Ridge’s fault, but it still makes me mad.
When class is over, I head down to the sheep. I need to think. I didn’t notice the farmer boy, and when he spoke I almost pulled out my knife. “Huh? What?” I said. He glanced at me, and then walked over to the sheep.
“I said hi, who are you?”
“Oh, I’m Shard.” I begin petting one of the animals. I never had a pet…
“I’m Surge.” he replies. He calls out to his sheep who is sleeping. It gets up and comes to him.
“I like your sheep, he’s cute.” I half-mumble awkwardly.
“Oh, thanks. I’ve had him for a long time.”
“I’ve never had pets…”
He starts talking about the pets he had on Earth, but then he says he has to go. We said goodbye and he left. He kinda seems lonely, but at least he has his sheep I guess.
The next night I’m in one of those moods again, the violent ones. They usually end in destruction of some sort, whether it’s to others or myself. It doesn’t matter tonight I have a target. I’m dressed in all black, and I have gloves on. The kids are at dinner with the mom. He’s staying to work on something. He doesn’t notice when I sneak in, or when I take a work knife laying on the dresser.
Suddenly he turns around. He cries out as I hold the blade to his throat.
“Mr. Waters, you killed my father, and now I will kill you.”
“N-no-”
He is silenced as I slit his throat, blood spilling to the floor. I drop the knife and leave, my whole body numb with hatred. I smile my father is finally avenged. Rest in peace, dad…
