CHAPTER 15: THE SHADOWS THAT MELT THE FLESH

We had been strewn about the center of the library for what seemed like ages, gradually moving closer and closer together in the center once the sun started to set. Our light was fading quickly and it was painfully apparent that we didn't have too much time left before we were left in the shadows.

The shadows drew closer to our tightly huddled group, things began to look hopeless. The Doctor was pacing in the little space he had to do so. I watched him carefully, trying to decide if he had a plan or if he was still trying to come up with one. He's yet to let me down, now wouldn't be a first would it?

"Doctor?"  I asked, standing and stepping towards him. He twirled around, tossing his sonic and catching it deftly.

"Hm?" He asked.

"Do you have any idea how we're going to get out of this?"

"Of course I do! I always have an idea! I'm the king of ideas! No no. Forget that, that's a rubbish title," He rambled, gesticulating.

Suddenly the group broke into a panic, some of them yelping in surprise as the sunlight faded more and the shadows neared. The Doctor and I stepped closer to the group again. Everyone was in a panic, so much so that Maisey was shoved back and into the shadows, seemingly disappearing.

"Maisey!" Someone cried.

"She just vanished!"

The Doctor shoved through the group to the side where Maisey had been.He turned on the sonic and pointed the light out to the shadows, searching the floor with the eerie green light.

"They've taken her... She's gone..." He sighed, dejectedly turning off the sonic and dropping his hand to his side.

"Gone? As in dead?" Marcus asked shakily.

"I'm afraid so..." The Doctor sighed. "Oh Maisey..." His jaw clenched, clearly unsettled by the loss. Delilah gasped and covered her mouth with her hand, just as upset.

"So that's it? We all get shredded by the shadows?" Apollo asked.

"That isn't even an option," The Doctor snapped, "We're going to get out of this. There is always a way out." Amy gently laid a hand on his shoulder to calm him down. He took a deep breath. "Sorry, sorry," he sighed heavily.

"But what about Maisey?" Soffie asked.

"I'm afraid that is one loss I can do nothing about," He said, closing his eyes for a moment. He took a deep breath before straightening up and fixing his bow tie. "We can't stay here."

"Well how do we leave?" Amy asked, slightly afraid.

"Sonic flashlight!" He announced, holding up the sonic and flicking it on, that bright green light pushing back the shadows. "We need to find a section of the library with more lighting if that is even possible."

"This will end well." Rory sighed.

"Well," began the Doctor, "Geronimo!" He stepped from the ring of quickly fading sunlight, the green aura of the sonic pushing back the shadows. "Come along you lot! Into the green light!"

Everyone tentatively did as he instructed and stepped out of the sunlight and into the light of the sonic. I laughed nervously, half thinking this would be the death of us, but also glad I wasn't being devoured by shadows.

"Righty-o. Onward." He said as he started walking slowly so that we could keep. He held the sonic up high so the light ring went farther, the buzzing of it echoing through the empty library.

Everyone followed along, all pressed close and looking around at the tall shelved. I glanced back at thee glass dome, the whole area now shrouded in darkness. We continued on for quite some time before finally, at the end of the long isle we saw a lit section. The Doctor began to hurry towards it, when suddenly Delilah tripped, the pastel pink haired girl was suddenly absorbed into the blackness, barely having enough time to call out. The Doctor stopped dead, having realised what happened and quickly spun around to see who was

"No," He sighed heavily, "We have to keep going," He said darkly and turned again to lead us all to the lit section of the library.

Suddenly a yell echoed through the library.

"Is that Maisey?" Soffie asked frantically. The others started to head out of the green light to search for the voice.

"STOP," The Doctor warned. Everyone froze dead in their tracks. "Stay in the green light. The Vashta Nerada will kill the lights and you'll all be gone. Stay in the green light. The extra light is just like a safety net. Don't trust it." He finished darkly.

"Then who screamed?" I asked.

"It's the Vashta Nerada. They are using her voice to lure you from the light. Maisey. Is gone. Delilah. Is gone. There is nothing we can do so don't pretend like you can bring them back."

A call from help resonated through the isles.

"That's Delilah's voice..." Marcus sighed, shaken by the eeriness of it.

"They stole it," Apollo added coldly.

We heard a scraping run along the backside of one of the bookshelves, some of the books dropping down. Our group pressed closer, staying as far from the edge of the green light as they possibly could.

"Now would be a good time to hatch an escape plan," Amy whispered to the Doctor.

"I've got it Pond, at least now we know it wasn't Maisey or Delilah. Down to the wire," He said quietly.

The whole situation was looking dark, in every sense of the word. At this point I wasn't so keen on the idea that we would get out of it. The lights above us began to buzz, when suddenly they exploded into a burst of sparks, we covered our heads as the glass shards and sparks rained down on us.

Suddenly we heard it again. The voices of Maisey and Delilah echoing through the isles of books. The anxiety was absolutely palpable, everyone writhing in panic.

"So this is it," Soffie whispered, "This is how it ends."

"Oh no," The Doctor said, "This is how it begins."
