CHAPTER 5: CARDIFF'S RIFT
Jack paled as he stared at the screen.
"They don't exactly go by 'the lonely assassins' anymore." Jack said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Try, The Weeping Angels." Jack's gaze slowly traveled across the room and rested on me. I felt my blood run ice cold. Tosh glanced from me to Jack.
"Jack, what is the second result?" She asked quietly. All eyes were on Jack as they all waited for him to speak.
"Time Lord." He said quietly. Suddenly pain ripped though my head. I sank to the floor with a groan as memories flooded back. A bright light blazed through the room suddenly, as soon as it faded away a necklace had appeared before me. The necklace. The splitting headache ripped apart any coherent thoughts. I fell forward onto the cement, one hand outstretched with my fingertips grazing the metal of the necklace.
"The necklace dropped through the rift! The Doctor must be close!" Jack yelled. "Run tests on the area!" He yelled. The Torchwood team suddenly scrambled about and went off to whatever station they needed to be at. I groaned again as more pain ripped through my head.

Small golden stars hung above my cot. The paint on the wood shimmered in the light from the blazing red sky above me. The desolate landscape that surrounded was hollowed by war. The war was over, and the whole planet lay in ruins. My Gallifrey was gone, and I was the last Timelady. A baby still but Timelady none the less. A cold breeze blew the stars around above my cot. The sound of rustling stone was carried through the breeze. I froze, reaching my small hands skywards in hopes of seeing my parents. No. Instead faces appeared around me. Stone faces, evil plastered across their beautiful, flawless faces. Stone wings stretched out behind them. I felt tears roll down my soft cheeks, yet no sound escaped me. With every blink they came closer, closing in on me. Cold arms enveloped me.

Jack sank to his knees and gathered Aranwen into his arms. The fob watch had popped open in her hand. He pulled the necklace from her limp fingers and tossed it to the side.
"Est?" He asked. He brushed the grey hair from her eyes in hopes of catching a sign to prove her consciousness. "Common!" He willed her. Aranwen sat up quickly and sucked in a deep breath. Just as her eyes had opened, tears began to stream down her cheeks, staining her porcelain skin.
"Jack!" She breathed and buried her face into his neck. "Jack... What am I?" She asked, her feeble voice muffled by his trench-coat. Jack wrapped his arms around her to comfort the small girl.
"Your not human, Est." He started. She let out a loud sob. "Your a Timelord- er- Lady. And it looks like at the end of the time war you were captured by the Weeping Angels and were gene spliced with Weeping Angel DNA." Jack held her closer as sobs racked her body. "I'm so sorry." He said into her locks of grey hair.
"Jack. Where's the Doctor?" She asked feebly. Jack sighed as she pulled away slightly to look at him.
"He's coming. We both know he would be looking for you and seeing as the necklace fell through the rift it looks like he is close." Jack said. Aranwen was quiet for a moment as she though over what he was saying. She sniffed and met his gaze.
"So i'm not human? Not even a little?" She asked, her voice a froggy whisper. Jack frowned slightly.
"Jack, we need you." Gwen interrupted as she burst into the room. Jack sighed.
"Yeah, okay. Est, i'll be back. We can talk then." He said, getting to his feet and rushing form the room. "I can send Owen in."
Not a second later a very confused Owen was shoved through the door. He cleared his throat awkwardly and shuffled over to stand by Aranwen. He crouched down and fell back on his haunches. Owen slowly reached out a hand to her shoulder. She looked up.
"Hey." He said. She looked up quickly.
"Owen?"
"Yes?"
"Look, I just stumbled into a blue telephone box and the next thing I know I fall through space and time, land in Cardiff, only to be told I'm not human." Aranwen said. Her tears had stopped and she looked more quizzical than anything. Owen was slightly surprised by her terse statement. In the few seconds it took for him to enter the room the girl had taken on an almost catatonic aura.
"This must be hard for you." Owen said lamely. Aranwen looked up at him with a smile tugging at her lips.
"You're not very good at this whole comfort thing." She said with a short laugh. Owen smiled.
"We don't usually go about comforting the people that fall through the rift. Usually, they try to kill us." He smiled.
"Well, I promise i'm not here to kill you." She laughed, scrunching her nose. Owen smiled at her.
"So you're doing better then?" He asked. Aranwen nodded thoughtfully before answering.
"Yeah, I mean I just got thrown into all this and I guess the only thing I can do is accept this mess." She said with a sigh.
"You're pretty brave." Owen commented.
"Thanks Owen." They both looked up as the door opened and Gwen came in, panting.
"It's all clear for now but there is a significant increase in rift activity." Gwen said in her thick welsh accent. "Ianto is setting up a bunk for you tonight Est, you can stay here in the base until the Doctor shows up." Gwen said with a smile, her doll-like eyes shone with empathy.
"Thanks, Gwen." Aranwen said. Owen stood and helped the grey-haired girl to her feet. Aranwen bent down to pluck the necklace from the floor.
"You know about a week ago I was sitting at my table eating soup." Aranwen reminisced. "And look now i'm an alien." She sighed. Gwen gave a sympathetic smile as the three of them went back through the door.
~ Aranwen POV ~
"Yeah, brilliant! Thanks Jack." I said, looking at the makeshift bed that was layed in the coroner office. "Not exactly where I would place my bed but it works." I placed my hands on my hips. The rest of the team had left but Jack stayed in the Torchwood base like he always did.
"I'm just down the hall if you need anything." Jack said. He pulled her in for a hug and kissed the top of her head.
"Jack?"
"Hm?"
"When the Doctor comes back, does he have to know about- well..." I trailed off. Jack frowned.
"If you really don't want him to know then he doesn't have to know right-away, but eventually yes. It would be for the best. He's a timelord you know." Jack said. I looked up quickly.
"He is?" I asked hopefully. Jack chuckled lightly.
"Yeah. The two of you can travel through time and space, the last timelords!" He chuckled, I laughed along with him.
"I think that enough alien stuff for me today, thanks." I decided.
"Yeah, okay." Jack laughed. "Good night."
"Night!" I called back before flopping down into the mattress.
