CHAPTER 17: SHADOWS AND DUST

~3rd person~

The Doctor was stressed to say the least. The group was becoming anxious and even more so after Aranwen's swan dive into the shadows.

"Alright," The Doctor began almost darkly, "we're going to get to the bottom of this."

By now the shadows had moved to only a certian section of the library, allowing the lights to flicker back on.

"How exactly will we go about that?" Amy puzzled.

"We find who is in fact behind this," he told simply, "That is all there is to it."

"What about Louna...?" Rory questioned after a long moment.

"Miss. Raven will be fine, Rory I assure you. This situation was brought on by my own past actions and I intend to correct them accordingly." He finally let the sonic turn off and stuffed it back into the pocket of his swim shorts. "Don't touch the shadows."

"Not planning on it," Amy promised.

"Where have the shadows gone?" Questioned Marie.

"Well, Louna seems to have done something to hold them off..." The Doctor trailed off, wracking his brain for a better explanation.

"We'll ask her if we can save her," vowed Amy.

"When," The Doctor corrected, "When we find her."

Amy nodded slowly in reply.

"No one is getting left behind. No one will die here. Not today," he continued.

"We've already lost three though," Soffie interjected.

"Temporarily. We will be finding them" The Doctor said sternly. No one else dared to speak to him about the losses.

"..What is that buzzing...?" Marcus asked quietly after a long moment.

"It's not the sonic..." Rory said. Everyone began to glance around at the comment, as if they could visually locate the source of the buzzing. It was quiet, just barely audible but undeniably existent.

The group began to gradually separate as they gained confidence to wander about once more.

"The speakers," Marie said after a while. The Doctor looked up.

"Speakers?" He asked. She pointed up at the speakers for announcements which were fastened here and there along the ceiling. "Speakers.... Speakers... Of course!" He exclaimed.

"What about them?" Marcus asked.

"Sound waves! The buzzing are sound waves, the wavelengths are set just so, that they can control the Vashta Nerada. Which means I am willing to bet that our traitor is in fact one of our deceased!"

A low laughter came echoing from several of the isles, the noise bouncing and making it impossible to find where it was coming from. They all turned frantically, searching the area for some visual source.

"Oh Maisey, Maisey, Maisey," The Doctor spoke with a solemn tone. The attention of the lot turned to the Doctor and his seeming resolution to the mystery.

"Yes, hello Doctor," the voice. Maisey's voice came from the speakers, the buzzing never ceasing.

"It was her?" Soffie asked quietly.

"Not quite. Maisey Burton is dead and has been for a long time now. Korst has been using her body as a backup body of sorts to get the job done. Planting the book. Setting the wavelengths of the audio. The Vashta Nerada are not allies of the slitheen. They're slaves of them. All we have to do is set them free," His tone was menacing, showing the dark side the Doctor clearly had. "We only have as long as what Aranwen has done to hold them off." He readjusted the sonic. "C'mon Korst you were never smart enough to finish us off," He chuckled darkly and held the sonic straight up, waiting for a reply.

"Maybe not, but it certainly won't be the last you hear of the Slitheen," the smooth voice came from the loudspeakers.

"Where are my friends Korst? They aren't dead, I know. The frequency keeps the Vashta Nerada from killing, I'm assuming so that you don't have to risk death for the sake of even revenge."

"We are but dust and shadows, Doctor," the voice came again after awhile. "Every species, every organism, every fiber of every being. Blowing about like dust, as impermanent and ever-changing as the shadows we cast."

"A little Horace never hurt anyone."

"I don't know the state of your friends, I can guarantee nothing," the voice said. The Doctor looked enraged.

"You will tell me what has happened with them or I will blow out the audio system."

"Do what you please, Doctor. Just know we will always be lurking."

The Doctor didn't take a moment more before he turned on the sonic, the loud buzzing off it filled the room, and suddenly all of the speakers exploded in a burst of light and sparks.

Everyone covered their heads as the sparks rained down. There was a small yell that came from somewhere in the library, and then complete silence. No soft buzzing. No quiet hissing. Absolute silence.

All the lights flickered back on. The Vashta Nerada had got Korst, it was over.
