Ava
My hands shook nervously. I'm actually going to Heaven.
No, not that way. I didn't die. I'm immortal, according to Aziraphale.
If you need a refresher, I'm going to Heaven to pretend to side with them, but really I'm going to find out their plan for Earth and Armageddon: The Sequel.
Right now, the three of us are in the bookshop. Crowley is throwing a fit because he doesn't want to turn into a snake, but I know he's going to. For me, of course.
Crowley shooed Aziraphale and I away. "Don't look at me. I can't do it with people watching." Zira and I look at each other and roll our eyes. Quite the drama queen for a demon. We step back behind a shelf and leave Crowley alone.
I hear a hiss and look at Aziraphale. "Stay here." He said.
"Oh, dear! Not a serpent, Crowley! A little snake!"
I sighed and rolled my eyes again. He's been doing this for how long? I peaked my head around the corner only to be met with piercing yellow eyes and black scales. I shrieked and jumped back.
"It'sss only me." The snake said.
I squinted my eyes and got up in his face. "Didn't Aziraphale tell you to turn into a little snake?"
The serpent shrinks back. "Fine." He replied with a hiss.
I turned my head for a couple seconds then turned back. I look down at the floor. "Aww!"
On the floor is the cutest little black snake. "Aren't you just adorable!" I reach down to pick him up only to have him snap at me. I pull back, "Hey! Watch it!" I bark.
Aziraphale chuckled. "Now, Crowley, be nice to Ava."
I giggled. "Don't you mean Crawley?"
Aziraphale joins me in laughing. "Oh, yes! I suppose since he is a snake, we shall revert back to his old name."
"Ssstop it!" Crowley hissed.
I smirked as an idea came to mind. "Let me pet you and I'll ssstop." I mocked.
The snake looked at me. "Fine."
I reached down and picked him up. He slithered up my arm and around my neck. His tongue darted out and touched my cheek. "That feels weird." I laughed.
Aziraphale looked at us with a weird expression. "Anyways, Crowley you need to play dead. They need to think you're a fake accessory." Crowley barred his fangs in response, obviously not liking that idea. "My dear, it's either that or we glue feathers on you."
I stifled a laugh. Crowley with feathers glued on him? That's a sight I would love to see.
Me too.
Who said that?!
It's Aziraphale.
What?!
I was waiting for the precise moment to introduce this to you.
Introduce what? Get out of my head!
I'm an Angel, it's my job to get into people's heads and put good thoughts in their minds.
Can I do that?
In due time, we'll work on it.
My patience is wearing thin. "Alright, enough of the games. Can we go now? I want to see Heaven!"
Aziraphale and Crowley nod in response.
—
The Stairway to Heaven was not what I expected.
"It's a building." I said flatly. I'm unimpressed.
"Precisely," Zira clapped his hands. "Hell is downstairs, Heaven is, of course, upstairs."
I shook my head in disbelief. "I walked past this building so many times. Who knew?"
Ava.
I thought I told you to get out.
I'm going to be around the corner, far away, but close enough to communicate with you like this.
I nod. It makes sense, I guess.
"Okay, it's go time." Aziraphale pushes me towards the doors and heads the other way.
I open the huge, glass door slowly. I look around in shock and confusion. It's just a plain building. No chairs, just glass walls and shiny tile floors.
In front of me, two escalators ran up to another floor. I stood there wondering which one to take.
Ava, the green colored escalator does not go up. For humans it does, but not us. The reflection of the green escalator on the ground is the way to Hell. Take the white escalator and you'll go to Heaven.
I took a step forward. I felt Crowley snuggle against my neck, as if he's assuring me that it will be okay.
I touch the first step with my foot carefully. Okay, so far so good. I place both feet on the step and hold on tight to the railing. As I near the top, my stomach starts to churn. Who am I going to meet up here?
I step off the escalator onto shiny, white floors. It's so bland up here, but very bright. White pillars are scattered about the large room. The windows are glass, but you can't see anything except clouds.
I hear the clicks of footsteps approaching me. "May I he- Oh! Are you Ava?" A tall, broad man walks towards me. "Hello. My name is Gabriel."
I gulp. Gabriel? The real Gabriel? Holy shit.
"I'm Ava." Gabriel sticks his stiff arm out to shake my hand. I politely shook his hand and nodded.
"What's your business here?" He questions.
"W-well, y-ou see..." Oh, come on. Get it together. Have confidence and act like you own the place. You got this girl! "Actually, I'm here on business. You see, I was at a costume party, which is why I'm dressed as Audrey Hepburn. Then it hit me. I would like to side with Heaven. I know Heaven and Hell are planning something, and I know it involves me. I've made my choice, so here I am."
Gabriel and the other angels look at me, taken aback by my words. Then, they laugh. They all burst into fits of laughter. "Are you serious?"
I put on my best poker face and look them all in the eyes. "Yes. I'm serious."
Their laughter dies down. "Oh." They all say in unison. The angels look at each other, unsure of what to make of this.
Gabriel claps his hands, "This is perfect! We're glad you chose the right side. We have very special plans for you."
He's trying to scare you. Don't let him.
"Oh, I just can't wait!" I exclaim dryly.
"Ma'am," I look at the angel whose speaking to me. He's a stout man, kind of chubby. "Why is there a snake around your neck?"
All of the angels raise their eyebrows and turn to me. I chuckle nervously, trying to keep my cool and not blow it. "It's fake, it's just an accessory. As I said, I was at a costume party. It's a thing humans have. Ever heard of it?"
Please believe it. Please believe it.
They all looked at me. Understanding replaced their looks of confusion. "Well then, Ava, please follow us this way." Gabriel directed me down a long hallway.
Don't be scared, I'm with you and Crowley is there for protection. Remember, he can help you if things get violent, but don't take him off your body.
This is it. Here we go.
