Chapter 2
"Mom? Dad?" I said shakily.
We just stood there for a while, staring at each other, when my father finally spoke.
"Hilary. How have you been?" He asked.
I stood there with my mouth open. How could he say that? After seven years he comes back and asks how I am? Unbelievable.
"How have I been?" I said barely just above a whisper.
"How have I been!?" I cried out louder now. "How can you just walk into my life after seven years and even have the balls to ask me how I've been?"
I felt tears in my eyes and I furiously blinked them back.
My mother just gasped, and my father stood in front of her protectively, like I would hurt her. I almost laughed at how he can be so protective of my mother but yet still not even have the thought of sending his children a letter.
"What the hell are you doing in my house!?" I sneered, disliking their presence inside my house.
"Well technically we own-" my mother started but I cut her off.
"Don't. Don't even go there. You don't own this house. You don't own me. You don't own Jordan or Chris. You don't even own a fucking heart!" I yelled at them, taking a step closer.
My mother looked furious and surprised at my outburst. How can she act like she cares if I swear? She sure has some guts to do that to me, I thought.
"What do you want?" I sighed, annoyed with them both.
The next words took me by surprise.
"I want you to marry my friend's son, and I'll never come back here again. I'll even pay you as much as you want and buy you anything, if you marry him." My mother said in a businesslike tone.
I just stared at her shocked. Then I doubled over in dark laughter.
My parents exchanged looks.
After I sobered up, I said, "You must be preeetttttttyy stupid." I said with a smirk as I watched my mom's jaw drop open and my dad glare at me.
"Let me make myself clear." I cleared my throat and paused for dramatic effect. "I.will.never.do.anything.for.you." I made an emphasis on never.
"Hilary you will do as you're told! Show me some respect! I am your mother!" My mother cried frantically.
I chuckled darkly. "Respect. That's the last thing you deserve."
"Hilary! That's enough young lady! You are marrying your mother's friend's son and that's final!" My dad yelled.
I kept my face blank, showing him he hadn't affected me.
"I promise, that I will never marry him." I said to my parents as icily as I could.
I watched as my mother flinched slightly, but quickly covered it up by standing up straighter.
"Yes you will and that's final. Don't make promises you can't keep." She glared at me.
"Oh don't worry, I definitely will keep my promise." I smirked.
"Now if you'll excuse me, I have better things to do, like go burn that rug you're standing on." I smirked at them with mock politeness.
"This isn't over yet." My mother said gravely.
I watched as she grabbed my father's arm and all but ran out the door.
As soon as I heard the door shut, I sank to the ground and started sobbing uncontrollably.
A few minutes later I heard the door open.
I glanced up from my hands that were covering my face as I saw Chris come in, through my tears.
As soon as he saw me, he ran over to me and pulled me into a large hug.
I sobbed helplessly into his shoulder, and a few minutes later, I sobered up.
"Ready to tell me what happened?" Chris said softly.
I nodded and he pulled me up off the floor and led me to the couch.
I explained everything to Chris, from the baseball bat to my mother's threat to come back.
He sat and listened to it all quietly, keeping his face unreadable.
When I was finally done, he got up and ran a hand through his dark brown hair, the same color as mine.
"I can't believe they did that! Screw them! Ugh! I always thought they'd come back to us. But never thought they'd ask for your happiness to take away and give to some stranger." Chris said as he paced the room.
"Hey. It's alright. I won't let them hurt us. I won't listen to them. I promised them I wouldn't marry him and I'm keeping that promise." I said gently. I felt a surge of unease pass in my stomach. Wait what?
"Come on, let's go and have some coffee. Then we'll pick Jordan up and go watch a movie. Plus it's Friday." I said trying to lighten the mood.
I watched as Chris slowly began to grin. "Only if we get to watch 'The Dark Knight'"
"You bet." I said with a grin.
So we drank coffee and picked up Jordan and thanked Marla. Then we got into our car, called Alex and Kylee to meet us at the movies, and drove to the cinema.
I tried to forget my parents, and tried to focus on the fun I was about to have with my friends and brothers.
Life was going fine until today. I sighed and cleared my head. No more thinking about stupid parents with their stupid favors. At least not today.
