Did Clarence have to be non-human when I felt like I had the slightest possibility of being with him? Not only does he have all the right qualities—beautiful, charming, and talkative—but he's also a vampire, which makes me and every other lady swoon.

Why?

Well, I knew they were out there. I was simply unaware that they were residing directly in front of my nose.

Hold on. Does Clarence's vampire status imply that The Four, the well-known group, are all vampires as well? Aren't Benjamin, Amelia, and Janice also not humans? Some spooky Halloween creatures are in charge of our school's social structure.

Who knows, too, whether The Four are all vampires? That implies that the cheerleaders are magic beings. Are those who are short indeed elves? Is the girl with the humpback in my math class a fairy trying to hide her wings? Are we all humans here? Or am I simply losing my mind?

Whether I like it or not, I have to admit this. Five murderous vampires share a school where I go. Is it right to be afraid for my life?

Back at the Plaza

Garret said, "What's your name, and what news do you bring?"

Clarence said, "My name is Clarence Hill, and Penelope sent me here."

The werewolves started chatting after that. I was ignorant of Penelope's identity. Pulling at Ethan's sleeve, I said, "Who's Penelope?"

"Penelope Bennett is the leader of the vampires. She possesses magical abilities, such as the ability to see into the future."

I gave a nod.

"Our great leader Penelope had a vision. She saw...the magical ones were coming," said Clarence as he resumed his speech in the centre of the square.

Everyone was whispering once more. I was aware of my ignorance once more. "Huh," I said, looking up at Ethan once more.

"The magical ones, also known as the Sorcerers. They're the witches, the warlocks, and the wizards. You know, with the spells, potions, and flying broomsticks?" he said, laughing, presumably at my ignorance.

I answered, "I know who they are." "How about them, though?"

The sorcerers are pure evil. Centuries ago, the magical ones cast a spell over hundreds of humans, controlling all of them like a zombie army. The sorcerers then declared war on all other creatures, and for many years, no one could defeat them on their own. However, when we banded together, the werewolves, vampires, ogres, fairies, and others defeated the sorcerers together, allowing only a small number of the witches to escape.

"Ethan remarked, 'Those magical ones are still out there, scheming their retribution, and it looks like some of them are coming here.' They haven't interfered with us since."

I questioned, "How come you never told me any of this?"

"It didn't come up," he dismissed.

"QUIET!" Garret commanded us all with a firm voice, turning back to Clarence. "What did Penelope say?" he asked.

Clarence said, "She wanted to get together so we could defend this town from the sorcerers."

Garret posed the queries that we were all curious about: "How much time do we have till they arrive? How many are coming?"

"There are three of them, and they're coming in two weeks," Clarence retorted.

The mutter began once more. For two weeks?

Garret remarked, "I guess we have some prepping to do."

Getting ready? "What are we getting ready for?" I turned to face Ethan once again.

He declared, "We are getting ready for combat." "You are staying on the sidelines here in safety."

"Battle?"

He cringed at the prospect: "We have to stop them before they cast a spell on the humans here for another zombie army. humans like you."

But what if the sorcerers have evolved? What if they are now kind and understanding?

Ethan shook his head and said, "Noelle, you don't understand. They are wicked by nature and will never be pleasant. Nothing can change that."
