His dark eyes focused on me like a strike of lightening. Making me feel hot and cold at the same time. Without a clock, I couldn't tell you how long I laid on the floor where he had pushed me down, too tired to run, too relived that he didn't want me dead. But either way, his eyes held a shocking focus.
I flinched as he moved, turning his body towards me, leaning to grab my arm which made me shrink away. Maybe I had been wrong and he was a cannibal, saving me to eat me himself. But then all he did was tug my arm forcefully.
"Come in, little fly," said the spider in a sweet voice. "Come on in for dinner." And like that little fly, I felt like it was me that was going to be dinner, yet as he pulled me up, a burst of curiosity flowed through me that made me follow him. What was he doing out here? Why was he here in this wilderness? Did he talk? How had he known to scare away the wolf like creatures with just noise? So many questions ran through my mind but I was unsure how to answer them, or get him to answer them.
As he dragged me behind him, giving me little choice but to follow him unless I wanted a broken arm, I had a feeling that no matter how hard I tried to pull out of his grasp, he'd only tighten his grip. So as I stumbled behind him, I watched the world around us. The bright flowers. The thick undergrowth but for the path that we were on. The giant trees which were bare towards the bottom, while their tops were full of vibrant green leaves. I even saw birds. Birds I never thought I would see. Beautiful coloured, striking birds that flew through the trees knowing exactly when to turn and how to fly through the thickness.
As the ground beneath my feet turned more rugged, I heard the sound of water rushing over rocks as though a waterfall was nearby. Where on earth was I? It didn't look anything like the England I remembered.
When his grip loosened all of a sudden, I actually felt a touch of disappointment at the loss of warmth, which was stupid as he had only been holding my arm. Looking away from the forest, I saw him turn to me and raise his palm in a gesture of 'stay', like how people trained their dogs. For a moment, irritation burst within me, I was not a dog! But then it occurred to me that maybe he couldn't speak or was deaf – no, he couldn't be deaf, he'd heard the wolf creature coming closer earlier.
As he moved into the cave like shelter, I bit my lip and turned around. Stay or go? Stay with someone who might kill me – even if he saved me several times. Or run and deal with a pack of wolf like creatures? I wasn't sure which the better option was.
When he came out of the cave, his eyes were accusing, as though he knew of my urge to run, although I wasn't sure if he was glaring at me because he'd wanted to chase or whether he was glaring at me for another reason entirely. Either way, I was questioning my earlier thoughts about him being my light in the darkness. He seemed pull the shadows in around him like a cloak, becoming a deadly creature among those in this wild untamed primitive forest.
