The leaf pile was starting to feel like a kids "naughty corner" for when they annoyed or angered their parents. "I'm sorry," I tried again, but as before, there was no response as he sat skinning the cat with the sharp rock that I had used to slice it's paw.
That was how the rest of the day went until mid-afternoon where he got up and left home cave. I didn't budge, and when he came back a few moments later, the first thing he did was check to make sure I was still where he had put me hours before. I hadn't moved, but I had learnt my lesson, out here, I was nothing but easy prey, so if I wanted to get home, I first had to try and communicate with him so that I could persuade him to help me.
Watching him shred a bizarre type of branch, I felt a dash of worry when he then started to walk over to me, crouching next to me, I felt my jaw drop when he then proceeded to wrap a plant version of rope around my wrist before looking around and pulling me over to a section of the wall where a thick root had broken through the top, as he tied the other end of the plant rope to the root and then tugged on it for good measure, I felt like a helpless chicken for slaughter.
"I won't go off, I promise," I pleaded.
He glanced at me, but otherwise ignored me.
"Wait!" I called as I realised that he was leaving me alone, leaving the cave with the cat's fur over his shoulder.
To my surprise, he paused and turned with a raised brow. In that moment, he looked like any man on the street, though mostly naked, but it made me forget what I had called him to stop for. He turned and walked away. Then it was as I knew that I could not shout unless I wanted to call something else's attention, that I remembered what I had been about to yell at him.
"You're not going to leave me are you?" and I knew that I would have shouted it even if I had not been tied up.
In the time that I sat on the leaves, several strange creatures wondered up and past the cave entrance. Some with fur, some without. Some truly strange looking, other looking like creature's I knew but could not quiet place what they were.
Without a clock, I don't know how long I was left alone, but I actually found that I missed his massive presence. I never – until he was pissed at me – felt truly scared while he was around, or at least, not after I had come to realise that he was helping me survive.
When he did reappear, his hair was soaked, and so was the cat fur – of which he laid out in front of the cave in the sun to dry as the sun was heavy in the sky, I was in the shade and even I could feel the heat.
On entering the cave, his eyes assessed me, as though checking that nothing had been in and eaten me while he had been out, then he checked the cave itself. Happy with what he saw, he released my wrist from the plant rope, and left it hanging from the root in the ceiling of the cave, it felt like a threat as it hung there. Don't run, or I'll tie you back up.
Turning away from it, I got up to stretch my legs, and followed him over to his sitting area. He turned to glare at me when he noticed how close I was to the entrance, so I raised my hands palm out and with a final stretch, sat down near his sitting area. He seemed suspicious at first, but left for a moment then returned with berries, placing them before me, followed by settling down in his sitting area to start cutting meat from the cat and eating it raw. As strange as it was, it felt a little like a new routine.
