Two hours later we were still awake. I had forgotten how close to the A5 my parents lived, and if I could hear every lorry that past, so could Ethan. It also wasn't helping that my mattress was really soft. The one at the hotel had been like a brick in comparison, but after all the sleeping on a pile of leaves, my bed was too soft.
"You asleep?" I asked the darkness.
"No."
"Me neither." Obviously. "I never thought I would say this but the bed's too soft."
I felt Ethan pause for a moment, before he ripped the duvet off me, leaving me to gasp a surprised "Ethan!" But then my pillow disappeared from under my head, leaving my head to bounce gently on the soft mattress.
"Ethan! What are you doing?" I squeaked when strong hands lifted me up, I felt him move, then I felt like I was slowly being lowered down onto the floor... on top of the duvet with my head on my pillow. I didn't say anything again as he stretched out next to me on his side, leaving an arm over my waist.
"Better?"
"Yes... Thank you."
"Sleep, Morgan."
So I did, turning to snuggle into his chest for the warmth that came from him like a burning, crackling fire. His arms came more securely around me, and in that moment, everything felt right. I wanted it to last forever. I was home. I had Ethan. I was... happy. But happiness doesn't last forever.
