Another week had past and I think we had started to become friends, if you could call it that. He had stopped his stalking, and instead scouted around to make sure wherever we were going was clear. I had come to learn the different noises he'd make like a kitten learning their mother's noises as to whether places were safe or dangerous, though I was still trying to get him to talk more, and he did a little in the home cave, but outside, he went quiet unless he was absolutely sure it was safe.
"What about this one?" I asked, presenting a berry for him to see. I had decided to get him to teach me which berries I could eat. So far, I had only gained a handful of blackberries.
His darted gaze glanced at the berry and he quietly said, "No." Which in my language meant 'no, it's poisonous'.
Moving on, I kept walking to find another type of berry I could question while popping a blackberry into my mouth. It was, if I was honest, beautifully wild out here, the only problem were the predators, otherwise I would have happily stayed. But I had been hunted enough this past month to last me a lifetime. I still wanted to go home, but I was not as desperate as I was before because I knew that 'Tom' was here to watch over me. Of course, that could change at any moment, he could be injured, he could die... and I would be left to fend for myself, which meant that I would be dead too.
Stopping by another bush with blueish berries on it, I picked one and turned to 'Tom', only to pause when I noticed that he was close to crouching over me, eyes intent on something around us.
"Wh–" his hand covered my mouth before I could say anything. Pushing me down with his body like he had a month ago, I looked around as fear filled me, were the wolf creature's here?
Crouching low, I army crawled myself under the berry bush I had just picked a berry from and looked at 'Tom' to see approval in his eyes before he stalked off. Tugging the cat coat closer, I hoped that it would ward other creatures away rather than closer.
Hearing a cry of war from 'Tom', fear shot through me, because I'd learnt that he would only do that if he was worried or pissed. When it was responded to by... another war cry? There were other humans in this forest? Of course their were, but why was 'Tom' attacking other humans? Or were they fighting off another animal? But then where was their sound?
With a frown, I wiggled my way out from under the berry bush. Only to pause when I saw mucky feet, looking up, I saw a shaggy haired human male with predatory eyes, and just then, I realised that everything I had come to realise about 'Tom's' kind-ish nature must have been true because in this humans gaze, there was nothing but an animal. A feral smile had me flipping and backing up under the bush as fear made me pant.
As the man pounced, I couldn't stop the panicked word from escaping, "TOM!"
