Theresa paused in the doorway and looked around, her mouth opening to an 'o' of surprise when she saw us curled up together on the floor. Ethan had moved into his protective, covering me stance when he had heard the door opening.
"Why, may I ask, are you on the floor?"
"We were going to sleep."
"To sleep... on the floor?" she questioned, but then she frowned and she turned sharp. "Why would you let her make you sleep on the floor, Ethan?"
"Make him?" I couldn't help but question.
Ethan moved to stand. "She makes me do nothing, and if you want me to stay, then she stays too."
"Ethan..."
"I mean it. If she leaves, I leave with her."
"But why? She's a nobody."
Ethan tensed. "She is everything. She brought me back from more places than you think. Without her, I would never have made it back."
"But–"
"She is mine, as I am hers, and you will not ruin that."
I felt my heart swell yet break in that moment. It was the biggest confession of love I had ever heard without the four letter word being said. Yet it broke my heart at his mothers expression: loss, she thought she had completely lost her son. Maybe she had, but if she had lost him, it would have been ten years ago, not now. If she lost him now then it would be because of her actions, not because he loved me.
Theresa stood in the doorway and had so many expressions cross her face that I wasn't sure what she was feeling any more. Then she left without a word. I wasn't sure how I quite felt about Theresa after that. Angry, sad, sorry, guilty.
"Hey, Ethan," I stood up and moved over to him, taking his hand, I gave him a tug. "Come with me."
