Heads hung low and tears fell, seeping into the soil. His wife sobbed as her daughter gripped her mother's skirt in much the same condition as her mother. People crowded around the casket, people that barely even knew the man. People who didn't even know him there to support someone who did.
Alexander couldn't help but feel annoyed at the crowd. He knew his companions felt the same but no one dared to say anything.
Flowers were thrown on top of it as people prayed at the side and spoke how sorry they were to his wife and children.
Before he could comprehend it Alexander was shovelling dirt onto his friends casket. Hercules and Lafayette by his side.
Once the hole was filled and smoothed people began to move from the graveyard. There was to be a small gathering of the dead mans good friends and family at his home.
Eliza kissed Alexander's cheek before leaving him behind. Hercules and Lafayette hung back with him. Together they stared at the headstone of the missing part of their group.

(I am deeply sorry if I got that wrong, his headstone was hard to read.)
A single tear slowly streamed down Alexander's face. His closet friend. The one he loved. Ripped from him and he didn't even get to say a proper goodbye.
Alexander opened up his Jacket and pulled out a bottle of Sam Addams. Hercules and Lafayette glanced at him and did the same. It was agreed without a word spoken that the three would do this. A simple look in the eye or a head nod said a thousands words.
Together they opened the beer bottle with their mouths. They lifted them up in the air.
"To John" Alexander croaked.
"To John" Hercules and Lafayette repeated.
They poured the beer on the grave. The soil soaking it up slowly. Now Alexander let the tears stream freely. Hercules wrapped his arm around Alexander's shoulders and Lafayette followed suit.
The three slowly walked away from John's grave and started to walk to his house. Alexander has composed himself by the time they were stepping through the door. Martha stood by the door many trying to comfort her but failing.
"Thank you for coming" she smiled at the groups of three.
Alexander didn't bother trying to smile. Lafayette gave a weak smile back for sympathy. They made their way into the main room where everyone was chatting with glasses of champagne. Alexander didn't feel like mingling. He didn't even feel like being here. He stalked over to the corner and leaned against the wall. He looked down at his feet the only thing in his mind was John. Everything about it. From the first moment they had met, his features, his personality and how they had instantly clicked. How they had hidden their relationship from all others. All besides Hercules and Lafayette.
Alexander jolted back to reality when someone touched his shoulder. He turned and saw the person he recognised as John's dad.
"Alexander may I speak with you for a moment in private?" he asked.
Alexander nodded and let Henry lead him away from the large group of people. Before Alexander knew it he was outside the house. No one was in sight.
"Listen Alexander" Henry put his hand on Alexander's shoulder.
His grip was tight and this worried Alexander slightly.
"We know about the letters."
Alexander looked up finally looking at Henry. He looked angry. Alexander looked in unbothered.
"You and my son are a disgrace to us all" he spat "this will not be our legacy."
"I assume that you've burned the letters" Alexander spoke in a raspy voice "John told me that you might."
"I refuse to let Your an excuse of an affair interfere with my family."
"John's your family" Alexander continued "and it wasn't an excuse of an affair I loved no I still love him."
"You don't know what you love" Henry's grip on his shoulder was getting tighter.
"I sure as hell do" Alexander glared at him "burn as much as you want. The world doesn't need to know about us. Only we do."
He shot his hand up to Henry's wrist and griped it.
"Now I'd like to go and mourn my lover if you'd please let me."
Henry eyes widened as Alexander ripped his hand off his shoulder. He calmly walked away from Henry keeping his cool for once in his life. Once he walked into the house he was immediately greeted by Hercules and Lafayette.
"Mon ami where have you been?"
"With John's father" Alexander sneered back simply.
Hercules gaped "does he..."
Alexander nodded "he does."
"And?"
Alexander gave a small, wavy smile "I couldn't care."
The friends smiled and Hercules asked "wanna go get a Sam Adams?"
Alexander grinned "Yeah."
They drank the night away. Sadness still lingering but the pushed it away. For him.
A drinking bud.
A friend.
A soldier.
A lover.
A hero.
