Chapter 34
Ashley-
The guidance counsellor, Sandra, had Ross and I talk to her separately first. I found it odd, but volunteered to go first. So right now, that's what I'm doing. Talking to her.
"How did you and Ross meet?" Sandra asks, and I don't answer for a moment.
Would it sound odd to her that we're half siblings?
"Um, well," I start. "His parents, who are now mine, adopted me into their family."
"Oh," she smiles slightly. "So you started going out like that?" I nod, and I smile at the thought. "Now, it says here you have a son and daughter. How old are they? Names?"
"Carter, Annabelle," I say. "13 and 9." She nods. "So what's happening with you and Ross? It says here also that you've been fighting a lot."
"Yeah," I say sadly. "It's always been this way; since after we got married." She nods again. "And I hate it, but it just happens."
"Sometimes," Sandra starts. "This happens. A lot of couples have this problem. It's not the people, it's just the atmosphere they're in. So for example; you're stressed out, that could be the root of your problem. But before I come to any conclusions, I'll have to talk to Ross."
I nod, and she stands, leading me out to the waiting room where Ross was sitting, scrolling through his phone.
Ross-
I hear footsteps, and immediately look up and see Ashley and Sandy - is that her name? - walking into the waiting room.
"Time for you to go in," Ashley tells me softly, kissing my cheek, and I nod, standing, following Sandra - oh yeah, that's her name! Hah - down the hall, to her office, and I sit in the chair in front of her desk.
"So how did you and Ashley meet?" Sandra asks.
"My parents - well now hers too - adopted her." I say, and I smile lightly, remembering the day we brought Ash home.
Sandra goes on to ask more questions - I'm sure all the same she asked Ashley - and then Ashley sits beside me in an identical chair in front of Sandra's desk.
Ashley-
"Okay," Sandra says. "By the looks of it, you two do have a problem," she pauses. "And I think it's because of what's happening deeper within you." She finishes. "What I mean, is that both of you must have underlying things going on; feelings, stuff like that, and you don't know how to, what word do I use? Deal with them."
"You mean how to talk about them?" I suggest, and Sandra nods. "Yes! Thank you. And maybe that's it. You'll come back in a week's time, and we'll see where you are then."
"Thank you," I say as Ross and I walk out of the office and climb into the car.
"So?" Ross' eyes don't leave the road as he asks this.
"That was good," I say. "Do you think she's right?" He nods slightly at a red light, turning his head to look at me. "Yea. You wanna talk more when we get back?" I nod, and Ross takes my hand in his across the console, one still on the wheel as we drive home.
~~~
"We're home!" I call through the house, and Carter and Annabelle thunder down the stairs.
"How did it go?" Carter asks quietly. "Good." I smile, making him smile lightly at Ross and I.
We had told Annabelle about all this, but since she's still pretty young, I don't think she understands fully yet. But that's okay, in a few years she will. After a few moments of silence, Carter speaks.
"Could I talk to you guys... upstairs?" He speaks quietly again, and we both nod, and Annabelle walks down the basement to - I'm assuming - play the piano or something do to with music down there.
"What is it, bud?" We all sit on the bed in mine and Ross' bedroom as he asks this.
"Will you ever get a divorce?" He says. "I mean, I dunno - just a thought."
My eyes widen a slight bit at the thought. I've never thought about that before.
"Sweets," I say softly, wrapping an arm around him. "We'd never do that. Ever." I look up at Ross who's eyes were looking sad, but I knew that was just because of the thought.
"Sorry, it was just a thought. I dunno." Carter says. "It's okay, don't worry." I dismiss it, and motion for Ross to come closer to us. He does, wrapping his arms around the two of us, and we stay there for awhile in each other's embrace.
