"LYRA! WHAT DID YOU DO WITH MY DRESS?!" I looked up from my book and sighed as Marie stormed into my room.

"What do you mean Marie?"

"MY DRESS! FOR THE HALLOWEEN PAGEANT! IT'S GONE! WHAT DID YOU DO WITH IT?"

"Oh."I rolled my eyes at her. "I didn't do anything to your dress. I haven't ever gone into your room. Why do you suspect me?"

"BECAUSE! DAD'S NEVER HOME AND MOM WOULD TELL ME IF SHE HAD DONE SOMETHING WITH IT! YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WHO'S HERE ALL THE TIME!"

"Well, I didn't do anything to your dress. It's as much of a mystery to you as it is to me."

"YOUR LYING! I-"

"EXCUSE ME? NO, I'M ACTUALLY NOT LYING, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU DRESS. I DON'T EVEN GO INTO YOUR ROOM! FOR GODS SAKE!"

"WELL IF IT WASN'T YOU, THEN WHO WAS IT?"

"I DON'T KNOW!"

"IF YOU DIDN'T TOUCH IT, WHO DID?"

"I. DON'T. KNOW! BUT IT WASN'T ME! SO STOP BLAM-"

"GIRLS! WHAT IS GOING ON UP THERE?"

"MOM! LYRA STOLE MY DRESS!" Marie immediately answered. "AND SHE'S LYING ABOUT IT!"

"I DID NOT! I DID NOTHING!"

"STOP YELLING!" By this time, Mother had joined Marie, Marie's friend Ashley, and I in my room. "Now. Marie, why do you think Lyra stole your dress?"

"Well, when Ashley and I got off the bus, we automatically ran to my room to look at my dress because she wanted to see it, but I had to get my things for her house, so I was going to show it to her and let her look at it while I packed, but when I opened my closet, my dress wasn't there! Not even the hanger!"

"Ohhh. I'm sorry sweetie! If I had known you wanted to show Ashley your dress I would have waited until after I had dropped you two off at her house before taking it to the dry cleaners. There was a nasty green stain on it. I don't know what from. I was going to tell you, but you beat me home. You can show her tomorrow, when she comes over to go trick-or-treating. Lyra will have picked it up for you by then. No go get your things together for you overnight at Ashley's. You have to be ready by the time dad is so we can go straight to the hotel after we drop you two off. Hurry along now."

As Marie and Ashley left, mother turned on me. "Now Lyra. What did I tell you about picking fights with your sister? You can't get her so upset so close to a pageant!" I opened my mouth to argue about how unfair this was, but the look on my mother's face, and bitter past experiences made me shut it without a word. "For this argument, you can't go trick-or-treating tomorrow night. You can stay here and hand out candy. And don't forget to pickup your sisters dress from the dry cleaners tomorrow. The girls will be dropped off at seven thirty, and everyone else will be meeting here at around eight. They're all staying the night too." And with that, she swept out of my room.

"I was planning on handing out candy tomorrow night anyway." I muttered to myself as I shut the door behind her.

Note to self: Write about this Tuesday. I had been writing a letter to Luke every week since the second one, and I was honestly feeling so much better. I wrote to him about the first day of school, and the family tree project for Spanish, and last week, I had written to him about the days of the dead, which were the day after tomorrow, and the day after that. Nothing that exciting. This next letter would be about Halloween.

A few minutes later, I was alone. Marie and Ashley were on their way to a sleepover at Ashley's, and mother and father were on their way to mothers business party a few hours away, and wouldn't be back until late Wednesday night. Free! I called Roxie and Ella, and soon the three of us were having a grand old time making Halloween snacks for the slumber party tomorrow night.
