“And then, she looked like she wanted to cry and hurt someone at the same time, and-”
“Whoa, whoa, what are you telling them about Mare?” I asked. I had just woken up, and Roxie was right behind me. We had just walked into the drawing room and found everyone else awake and listening to a story Marie was telling.
“What happened at school with Isabella the day Nora got here.
“Oh, I have a video of that on my phone. Hang on.” Roxie went over to where her phone was plugged in, unplugged it, and pulled up the video. We all watched it, and afterward, they were all congratulating me.
Then the phone rang.
“I’ll get it. It’s probably mom or dad. . . or both.” Marie said. She got up and answered the phone, which was in the kitchen, while everyone else kept congratulating me. A few minutes later, Marie came running back into the room.
“Lyra!Lyra!Theyrecomingbackhomeearly!Wehave-”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Marie! Calm down! Take a deep breath, calm down, and talk slowly.”
“I was right, it was mom, and she said they’re coming back home early, and that they’ll be here in five minutes! What do we do?”
“What! Oh no! Umm. Ok, ok, you two,” I pointed at Roxie and Marie, “start cleaning all this up. And you five,” I pointed at Nora, Ashton, Luke, Michael and Calum, ‘go to my room. Up the stairs, first. . . actually, just follow me.” I rushed upstairs, into my room, and opened my closet door. “In, in, in. Sit, stand, whatever, just be quiet.” I shut the door, and rushed downstairs to help clean up.
We put everything in the big recycling bin in the garage, put the bowls in the dishwasher, and I told Marie she had to act like she still hated me. She agreed reluctantly. Then we sat down on the couch. Not even two seconds after we sat down, the front door opened and mother and father walked in.
“Oh. Hi.” I said slowly.
“What are you and she doing here? I thought you were spending Easter break at her house.”
“We were. But my brother’s both had friends over last night, and we didn’t want to be around them. Since you guys weren’t home, we decided to come here. But now that you are here, we’ll just change and go.” Roxie said smoothly.
“Good. I don’t need vermin like her in my house. My father said. As he spoke, he got closer to me, then pushed me really hard on my arm. In the same place he grabs me when he;s angry at me, or the first place he slaps me when he has guests over. It really hurt.
The two of us stood up and hurried upstairs. I made a big show of slamming my door. “I hate them, I hate them, I hate them. I really, really hate them.” I said as I walked into my closet.
I grabbed some clothes and changed in the bathroom in the hallway. Before I walked back into my room, I brushed my teeth and my hair, washed my face, and took a couple deep breaths.
I walked back into my room and put on my boots. “Okay. Today, we’re going to tour this city. starting with. . “ I unplugged my phone and checked the time. Almost noon. “The park. We can walk there, but we shouldn’t walk back, so we’ll drive. I’m surprised we weren’t questioned about the extra car in the driveway, honestly.” I said. “Is that okay with everyone?”
