“I still haven’t read the rest of the letters Luke. That could be your Christmas present to me. Permission to catch up with the rest of you guys about this whole ‘Letters from Lyra’ thingy.”
“Well if that’s all you want for Christmas . . “
“No Ashton! I actually do have a Christmas list - like a new camera for instance - but I also really, REALLY want to read those letters! It’s all anyone talks about, and I’m always so lost because I haven’t read them yet!”
“Okay, okay, I’ll go get them now. The boys and I will finish putting the snacks out while you read them. Seriously, you've been here since seven this morning. You've done enough.” I laughed as I put a bowl of goldfish on the table. It’s 1:27 in the afternoon, three days after Christmas and everyone's families, including Nora’s, will be arriving around three. Of course, we celebrated Christmas with our families, but this was another, smaller one, with everyone’s families together. I gave Nora the letters and forced her to sit on the couch and read them. “I’m pretty sure everything’s done anyway.”
“What about dinner? That’ll take hours to make!”
“And you have to wait for all the mums. People will be bringing food for them, so that will make it easier, plus all of our mums would kill us, and especially me, if they came in and found that you were making Christmas Dinner alone. Then they’d kick you out of the kitchen and finish for you. Come to think of it, they probably won’t let you help anyway.” Ashton said, sitting down next to her. “Everything is ready, by the way.”
All five of us were sitting down, exhausted, while Nora read. The time passed quickly for me, especially because I fell asleep. Next thing I knew, I was being shaken awake.
“C’mon buddy. Wake the hell up. It’s quarter to three, get up.”
“Wha? Whas goin’ on?” I mumbled as Nora’s face came into focus above me. When she saw my eyes open she moved on to Calum while explaining everything to Ashton and I
“You ALL fell asleep. Guess you needed the rest, huh? Anyway, I finished the letters. When I did, I realized you were all asleep and it’s almost three. So I pushed Ashton off of me to wake him up, then woke you up. The letters are on the couch.” By this time, Calum was also awake, and Mikey was getting there.
“Cool.” I put the letters back into my room then sat back down in the living room and tried to look lively.
“By the way, if you ever get a chance to meet Lyra, don’t turn it down”
“Wasn't planning to.” Nora either didn't hear me or ignored me, because she kept talking.
“She truly is a special girl. I mean,She cares for her sister, even though they've never gotten along, her parents treat her like an object but she doesn't have a cold heart, she’s probably the nicest person in the world. And I've never even met- her!” She was prevented from continuing by a knock at the door.
“I’ll get it! Michael jumped up and hurried out of the room. He probably didn't want to hear anything else from Nora in case she kept talking. He’s not exactly the lovey-dovey type. A few minutes later, Mr. McLeod and Calum’s parents and Mali were walking through the doorway, all with present’s in hand. Even Michael had presents, though I suspect they were all from Mr. McLeod.
“MALI!” Calum jumped up and hugged her, knocking all the presents to the floor in the process. He had a reason to, of course. HE hadn't seen Mali since she had left for college a few months ago.
