- Sunday August 7th -

Today is Marie's 13th birthday. Yay. Note the sarcasm. I love my sister, I really do, but her birthdays have always been a magnet for drama. Right now, I'm lying in my bed, playing on my phone because it's 4:53 in the morning and I can't fall back asleep.

When my alarm went off, I got my clothes, and hurried to the bathroom to shower. By the time 5:30 rolled around, I was showered and dressed. Since Marie's party didn't start until one this afternoon, I made plans for the morning. Roxie was picking me up super early so I wouldn't be roped into helping set up Marie's party.

When Roxie called, I answered her immediately.

"What do I need to bring?" I whispered.

"Brush, hair ties, and Marie's present. You did get her a present right?"

"Of course. I value my life, thanks. It's already wrapped though, so I'll probably leave it with her."

"Yeah, ok, silly me. I'll do your hair when we get to my house, then we'll just hang out for the day until it's time for the party. Ella and I will be going by the way. Where is it?"

"Tell you in the car. Don't want to wake the parents. Be down soon." I replied.

While we were talking, I had grabbed the things I needed and put them in a bag. Once we had hung up, I put my phone and its charger in as well, then slipped on my shoes, a jacket, and a hat before hurrying downstairs.

As I put my hand on the doorknob, I paused. I'm not sure why, but I pulled out Marie's present - a sardonyx necklace in shades of orange wrapped simply in brown paper and twine - and quietly ran back upstairs. I stopped by my room and wrote on a piece of paper:

Happy Birthday Marie
P.S. It's fragile

I snuck into Marie's room and put the package on her bedside table with the note peeking out from underneath it. I turned to Marie, who was sleeping peacefully. I lightly brushed some hair out of her face with my fingers and leaned close to her. "I love you Marie." I whispered in her ear.

Then, I hurried out of her room, downstairs, and out the door, only pausing to pick up my bag

"Holy shit it is cold!" I all but screamed when I shut the door of Roxie's car.

"I know! This is unnatural! You know what it means? It means something special is going to happen this year! We might get snow! Before Christmas! Or during Christmas..but not just after!"

"I don't care. Yes, snow would be awesome, but you know what would be magnificent? Being told that we're getting breakfast. Because I. Am. STARVING!"

"Well, you're in luck! We are getting breakfast because I too am hungry. Plus, if we didn't, we would probably wake up my family trying to make ourselves breakfast at my place. And I will not let that happen. Don't want to deal with that today. Where do you want to go?"
