I was so immersed in my book that I nearly had a heart attack when I heard my phone vibrate on on the table in front of me. I checked the message, and replied.
From: Rox
Hey, meet at DD in 15. Got a letter for you.
To: Rox
Already here. See u soon! :-)
From: Rox
KK! See you! I texted Ella already.
To: Rox
Cool. See u!
Today has been eventful. It’s Valentine's Day, and all the couples, and even some people who aren’t couples, just really good friends, were being super romantic today, because they could get away with it. Roxie complained almost all day, and I can’t tell you how many times she looked like she was about to throw up. Ella thoroughly enjoyed herself, and ditched us most of the day to hang out with some guy she’s been really into lately. I wouldn’t be surprised if they started dating soon, though the guy isnt really nice to Roxie or me. I hope she’ll come to her senses, but with Ella, you never really know.
I went back to my book, only to be interrupted five minutes later by Ella sitting down next to me.
“Hi.” I put my bookmark into the book, and put it back on the table, next to my my long empty Mint Hot Chocolate Cup. I’d been here for almost an hour, and I was on good terms with the workers here.
“Hey. Why did we choose Dunkin’ Doughnuts? Why not starbucks? There’s nothing good here.” She replied after looking at the menu.
“You only think that because you’ve never tried anything here, and they don’t have what you normally get at Starbucks. Jeeze Ella, you’re such a white girl. Try something new for once, maybe you’ll like it. It can’t hurt to broaden your surroundings, as Mia would say.”
“Mia?”
“Roxie’s stepmom.”
“Oh. Right. Were here because you and Roxie like this place, but not Starbucks, for some strange reason, and you got another letter that Roxie has for some reason. Why are we still doing this? How do we know it’s even him writing back, and not someone who he’s hired to do it for him? How do we know that he even actually cares?”
“Ella! I thought you were a fan of them! And bes-”
“I like One Direction better. Harry Styles is the bae! But anyway, I doubt Luke’s even gotten one of your letters.”
“What’s your problem Ella? Why are you suddenly so negative?”
“I’M NOT BEING NEGATIVE! I’M BEING REALISTIC!” She suddenly burst out. “I HAVE HAD A HORRIBLE DAY! ROXIE ACCUSED ME OF BEING FRIENDS WITH THE POPULARS, AND GOING BEHIND YOUR BACK AND AND PLANNING ON HURTING YOU AND NOW I’M AT DUNKIN’ DOUGHNUTS AND I DON’T EVEN LIKE DUNKIN’ DOUGHNUTS!”
I was shocked into silence. Plotting with the populars? Ella would never do that. Would she? I thought back to earlier that day, when Roxie and I had seen her conversing and laughing with the populars. Ella had noticed us, and had a panicked look on her face, then excused herself and came up to us and said that she had been trying to get away for a while, and that they had drawn her in. I realized that she hadn’t looked us in the eye, just like she was doing now. She was rocking back and forth on her feet on both occasions, and her hand was twitching. Besides, I know for a fact that Roxie would never accuse anyone of something without good reason. She got so pissed when someone assumed something about her without all the facts because her mother did that all the time. And so I came to a conclusion.
