Fallen Angel

Chapter 7

It had been four days since Johnny had been instructed to avoid contact with the others or anyone else, it wouldn't be good if some random passerby on the sidewalk randomly got his powers and caught fire, and Nyx could tell just spending time with Ben was boring him. Luckily though later they would all be meeting General Hagar for the 'fun' to begin.

            "I can't just ignore it!" Sue snapped at Reed and stormed, like her last name suggested, out of the lab.

            "TV again?" Nyx asked, she'd seen the reports about the 'Flaming Invisible Woman' on the TV and knew it was only a matter of time before Sue saw.

            "Yes, and Reed's dancing!" She wailed.

            "People will get over it... that's what they do. Something comes up and they talk about it for a while but eventually they move on."

            "Easy for you to say, your face isn't on every news channel."

            Nyx glared at her as a pulse of frustration went through her before breaking a water pipe and sending boiling water at the back of her head. "Then don't come around me next time you need someone to make you feel better!"

            Susan shrieked in shock and pain as the water hit her before moving out of the way and sending a force field at Nyx causing her to fall off the couch and onto her face. Next she made another one appear to stop the water from flooding the entire kitchen; the noise made Reed and Johnny run out to see what was going on while Ben came in at his earthshaking pace.

            "Nyx what did you do?" Reed demanded.

            "She ticked me off so I reacted in the manner I thought was appropriate." Nyx replied calmly, though she still thought Sue should learn to take sympathy.

            Sue glared at her but decided not to say anything and turned sharply down the hallway and into her room. Ben sighed and looked down at Nyx. "That was uncalled for."

            Nyx felt another pulse of frustration go through her but didn't react on it this time and just let them lecture her, after all if they wanted to deal with Sue's overreaction to the news let them, she was just grateful her brother wasn't reacting the same way.

            "I'll go find something to fix this, Ben, make sure it doesn't keep flooding." Reed ordered before turning to Johnny. "And you... make sure my sister doesn't get into anymore trouble."

            "Okay." Johnny smirked and got ready to switch powers with Nyx.

            "That doesn't mean you can get into trouble ether. Stay far enough away to keep your own powers."

            Johnny watched him leave before ushering Nyx out of the room and into the elevator. She leaned against its side and smirked. "Bet you're glad to finally be getting out of the building."

            "Oh we aren't leaving. I can't risk losing my powers to a random stranger." Johnny laughed. "We are taking you to the roof so you can let off some of that anger."

            Nyx glared at him half-heartedly. "Yes, because letting me bust open all the water lines to flood the city, is staying out of trouble."

            Johnny gave her his famous mischievous smile and kissed her before she could move away. Nyx felt heat rush through her, not the kind you get when you're embarrassed or in love, but like she was made of fire. At the same time she lost her wings, which felt weird after getting used to them for so long. When Johnny pulled back he smirked and stretched out his black and gold wings to examine them.

            "Looks like you're the angel now." Nyx grinned and decided to try out his own powers. "So teach me how to fly with fire."

            "Uh... remember what happened with my sister?" Johnny asked and cleared his throat uncomfortably.

            "Right... thanks for robbing me of my flight." Nyx told him and shot a small ball of fire at him. "Now give me my powers back."

            "Catch me." The elevator door opened and Johnny ran out and jumped over the edge of the building.

            "Great... more stuff on the news I bet." Nyx groaned before running over to the edge so she could chuck fireballs at Johnny.

            She looked down and saw him slowly flapping his wings to say in the air; apparently he didn't have to know how to catch air currents when flying with fire. This is going to be too easy. Nyx snapped her fingers and summoned more fire to her hand before shooting it... and missing, she tried again and again before cursing in frustration and sending two at him at once. Johnny yelped as one singed his wing and the other grazed his arm.

            "Do I win now?" Nyx shouted down to him.

            In response Johnny flew up and awkwardly landed beside her. "Yes."

            Nyx smirked and touched his shoulder to get her powers back, when her wings were back though she noticed something; they both felt the same again and the metal 'bone' couldn't be felt through the skin.

            "It's gone..."

            "What is?" He asked. "You can't control water anymore?"

            "No, my wing is healed."

            "So... I did you a favor."

            "Don't get a big head." Nyx laughed. "Besides now I can always go to you if my wing breaks, switch powers, and then switch back and be healed in seconds."

            "Well thank you for only wanting to use me for my unwanted new ability." Johnny replied sarcastically.

            They sat up there for a few hours talking as they waited to meet Hagar. Once it was about one o'clock Nyx stood up and decided to go back inside to get ready to go, half way to the elevator another pulse went through her, only once had she felt like this and that was helping Victor turn Ben human and make himself stronger. Johnny saw her feathers ruffle and the gold ones glow a bit before running over.

            "Nyx what's wrong?" He asked and was about to reach out and comfort her but remembered not to at the last second.

            "I... I don't know." Nyx clenched her fists as the pain continued but stopped when Johnny's arm started turning blue.

            "I'll get Reed."

            "No!"

            "You need help. What if what the surfer did to me is spreading?"

            "I don't think that's it. This has been happening the past three days each one varying in strength but I think it's just a build up from not needing to use my powers... don't tell my brother please." The pain faded and Nyx backed away towards the edge of the building. "I think I'll just fly to my level."

            "Nyx?" Johnny looked like he was in pain but she knew he was just worried about her.

            "I'm fine Johnny. This was just a little worse than the others but I'm sure they'll pass."

            Johnny watched her fly off and down the side of the building, she might not want him to tell Reed but not listening to what he was told to do was one of the things he was best at. If Nyx was hurt somehow by Silver Surfer or dying because of him he couldn't just hide it from her brother.
