Ahh yes, these two work hand in hand in our everyday dialogue. They do in mine. In fact, these are things we have supposedly learned in primary school (elementary).
Second grade
In = Out
Up = Down
Is = Is notLexical semantics.
So, for the ones at the back, I'll verily explain it in layman's terms. A synonym is merely a similar word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language, for example shut is a synonym of close:
Idiot / Imbecile.
Moron / Dullard.
Half brained / Scatterbrain.And antonyms/autonyms are the opposite of these words. For example:
Idiot / Prodigy.
Moron / Genius.
Half brained / Intellectual.The skills of learning more opposites is thusly added to your own knowledge base and repertoire, then further attained through secondary school education. Unless you spent your well earned time behind the bike sheds giving out free five knuckle shuffles in order to become more popular?! Were you doing that, rather than immersing your mind in a plethora of good reading material?
(Come to the headmaster's office after school)
Regardless to how you are spending or how you've spent your formative years in academia, antonyms and synonyms were meant to be solidified in the tertiary grade. Expected to be in your vocabulary by the quaternary stage (university). Or upon leaving school.
(Forgive me for those who haven't got there yet. I'd highly recommend it.)
