Chapter 7: Scared (怖がった)

Tanjiro and you went inside the broken house, wondering where everyone went.
"Miss Tamayo! Yushiro?"
"Over here! Over here!"

Yushiro was calling down the stairs where light was shining.
"Not that you two need to come at all. But if you want to, then get down here" he said.
"Yushiro!"
"Only joking!"
"Hurry down, then, Tanjiro! (y/n)!" Tamayo says.

"Oh, right! Come on (y/n)" Tanjiro takes your hand as you two go down the stairs. Tanjiro smiles as he sees Nezuko okay.
"Nezuko!"

Nezuko ran to you and Tanjiro and hugs you both.
"I moved here to this basement, where the sunlight won't reach her, ahead of daybreak" Tamayo said.

Nezuko lets go and runs back hugging Tamayo, which surprised and infuriated Yushiro.
"Nezuko?"
"Why, you! Stay away from Lady Tamayo! That's so rude!"
"Stop it, Yushiro, I don't mind at all"
"Yes, ma'am!"

Nezuko looks at Yushiro and starts to pet his head.
"Cut...that...out!"
"Nezuko has been acting this way since she awoke. Do you think she's all right?" Tamayo asks.

"There's nothing to worry about. She's fine. She probably thinks you're someone in our family" Tanjiro says.
"Cut it out!"
"Is that why she gets so affectionate?" You said and he nods.

"Family? But I thought the spell Nezuko is under causes her to see humans as her family. And Yushiro and I are demons" Tamayo said.
"Cut it out!"

"But Nezuko has perceived you two as humans. That's why she tried to protect you" Tanjiro said.
Nezuko stops bothering Yushiro and goes back to nuzzling Tamayo.

"At first I didn't like the idea of Nezuko being under a spell, but since it looks like she has a will of her own, I'm glad that—" Tanjiro was cut off by Tamayo in tears.

"I-I'm so sorry! Nezuko! Nezuko! S-step away from her! It's rude, all right?"
Tamayo hugs Nezuko back.
"Thank you...Nezuko! Thank you!"

It took moments later after Nezuko stopped hugging Tamayo.

"Yushiro and I will leave this region. We've gotten to close to Kibutsuji. We must conceal our whereabouts soon or the risk will be too great. Not to mention, even if I think I've concealed my identity, when I interact with humans as a doctor, people sometimes see through me as a demon. The young and elderly are particularly perceptive. Tanjiro..."

"Yes?"
"Would you like us to take Nezuko in?"
Yushiro gasps in fright and shakes his head no.
"I can't give you an absolute guaranteed that she'll be safe, but I believe it will be less dangerous than taking her into battle" Tamayo said.

Tanjiro had some time to think, until he felt his hand being grabbed by Nezuko. Nezuko was looking at him in the eye. This made Tanjiro smile as he gripped his hand with her.

"Miss Tamayo, thank you so much for your concern. But...Nezuko and I stay together. We're not going to live apart from each other. Never again..."

Tamayo smiles and nods.
"Very well. In that case, I wish you three long-lasting good fortune in battle" Tamayo said.
"All right. We'll be leaving after we erase all traces of ourselves. You three get going now!" Yushiro said.

"Right! Okay, Miss Tamayo, Yushiro, we wish you well! Let's go, Nezuko and (y/n)"

Nezuko then started running upstairs.
"Hey, don't go rushing off like that!"
Tanjiro was about to run after her until Yushiro called to him.
"Tanjiro...! Your kid sister...is a beauty"

Tanjiro smiles and laughs. As he went upstairs, you were the only one left. You felt sad and regretful. Tamayo sensed that.

"Are you okay, (y/n)?"
"...I'm sorry"
"Huh?"
"I'm sorry for saying all those horrible things to you two. You both are still people, and I should be grateful for all that you've done. Thank you for everything" you bowed to Tamayo and Yushiro.
