“What happened to her how did this happen,” I asked frantically when we arrived to the hospital. When Dee called he told me that my grandma had fainted. I don’t understand why she would just faint out of nowhere. “She’s in the back, they won’t let us see her until they are done,” Dee said coming up to me. I sat down in a chair and tried to calm my nerves.

Moments later Antonio arrived from parking the car. As soon as he sat down beside me, you could feel the tension in the room rise. “What’s happening, is she okay?”

“What’s it to you,” Kameron said before I could respond. Antonio looked at him as if he was contemplated his answer but just turned back to me as if nothing was happening. “Are you ok?”

“Naw man, why the fuck you here,” Kameron asked again this time louder. I just sighed to myself trying to brace myself for what’s to come next. Again Antonio just looked at him but then he laughed to his self while shaking his head. “What’s so funny nigga!” now Kameron was standing up right in front of Antonio. I could tell he was trying to stay calm but he was on the verge of breaking. I grabbed his hand and squeezed it which caused him to look at me. I needed him to stay calm for me.

“Brown Langston,” the doctor said causing me to fly out of my seat. “Is my grandmother okay.”

“She is fine, she fainted due to her high blood pressure.”

“Can I see her?”

“Yes you can, she should be waking up soon.” Once she told us the room I rushed her room. I needed to see her and confirm with myself she was okay. When I entered she was hooked up to machines, I walked in slowly until I was standing beside her. I grabbed her cold hand and just stood there. I couldn’t believe she was in the hospital. All I wanted to do was cry and cry until it was over with. “Child don’t cry,” a crackling voice said. When I looked down her eyes were open but barley. “Child I’m fine,” she said wiping away a tear I didn’t know had fallen. Next thing I knew I was full blown crying my eyes out. “I was so scared when I heard you were in the hospital I didn’t know what to do. What will I do if I lose you?”

“You will live your life like you been doing. Child I ain’t gonna be here forever and will it is my time I need you to be ready. Yo brother ain’t gonna sit around and mope around for me, he gonna move on with his life.”

“I’m not like him though, I can’t just forget about my loved ones like that.”

“And I’m not asking you too, but I’m asking that you don’t put your life on hold for me when I’m gone cause doing that ain’t gonna bring me back.” I didn’t know how to respond. I don’t want to lose my grandmother but I know that putting my life on hold wouldn’t do any good. “Where ya brother at anyway?”

“O, he in the waiting room. You know he don’t like seeing loved ones in the hospital.” Just then the door opened and it was Antonio. “Sorry to interrupt but it was getting tense out there, so I thought I better come and tell you I will be in the car.”

“Antonio? Is that you boy,” my grandma asked moving me out the way. “Yes mam it is. How you doing?”

“I’m doing fine thank you but apparently not as fine as you.” Was my grandma seriously flirting With my boyfriend? “Boy I remember when you were a little old thing but now you just a well-built goddess. God damn whoever get you is in for a treat.”

“Well, I guess that’s your granddaughter then,” he said laughing and kissing my cheek.

“What you mean?” here goes nothing. “Me and Antonio are dating grandma,” I said trying to read her response. “And when was I gonna know about this?”

“I thought you already did. I mean Dee and Kameron have expressed their emotions about us very clearly thought one of them would have told you,” I said shrugging. “And why don’t they approve? I mean I can understand why Kameron don’t but ya brother never cares about who you dating.”

“Well, Antonio is kind of the kingpin of their rival gang.” She burst out laughing immediately. “Girl you done got yourself in a pickle uh.”

“Got that right.” Then Ant’s phone rung which caused him to have to step out.

“So you telling me instead of dating Kameron you chose his rival? Girl you must have a death wish.”

“Kameron wasn’t stepping up so I cut him loose and then when I start dating Antonio then he wanna care.”

“Hell ya the boy gonna care. He has had a crush in you since ya brother brought him home to meet us. He wants to do right by you I can see it but it just don’t know how.”

“So I’m supposed to sit around wasting my life until he do?”

“No, but you aren’t supposed to opt out for the safe choice. The only reason you with Antonio is because you scared of getting hurt by Kameron. I have always told you to follow your heart and then I see you with a boy that I know you don’t love, flaunting him around in front of the boy you do love.”

“I don’t love Kameron,” I said trying to defend myself. “Girl hush that up. You have been after that boy for years and now all of a sudden you over him like that because he made a few mistakes. If you want him to pick you give him a reason.”

“So I’m supposed to just drop Antonio just to go on a roller coaster with Kameron?”

“No, I’m telling you to follow your heart and not your fears.” I was so busy thinking about what my grandma had just said I didn’t hear the door open. “Hey grandma,” I heard the familiar voice speak. I turned around and came face to face with Kameron. We were literally inches apart and my heart was racing. No matter what he did he always made my heart race. “Hey boy how you doin,’ come give me a hug.” He walked over to my grandma’s bedside while I stood frozen still. “You been okay? I haven’t seen you in a while, you used to come over every night for dinner and breakfast had me thinking you lived there.”

“Well, that’s when I had a reason to come,” he said as I turned around to face him once again. He was looking me dead in my eyes which made me tremble at his gaze. It was like I could feel his thoughts and emotions radiating off of his body. Of course, I missed him he was the only thing that made me laugh when I was down. I could go to him whenever, even if he was working, he would drop everything to comfort me. Antonio never did that, he would tell me to hold on he was almost through, y the time he was finished I ended up in an even worse place.

“Okay then, what if Ariel stops by one morning, you think I will get to see your smooth face then,” my grandma asked trying to break the silence of us staring. “Only if she wants me there.” Those words seemed to hold so much more meaning then him just coming over for breakfast. “What’s your answer Ariel,” my grandma asked looking up at me. I could tell she was doing this on purpose and I didn’t appreciate it one bit. “Ummm…”

“Hey babe you ready to go,” Antonio asked as he came in saving me from my worst nightmare. “Yea sure. Let me say good bye.” I leaned down and hugged my grandma real tight. “I will see you tomorrow granny.”

“Okay baby, remember what I told you.” Instead of answering I just nodded and left out with Ant. The whole ride home I was silent still thinking about what my grandma had said. Was I with Antonio because he was the safe choice? Was I scare of being with Kameron because of the unknown possibility? I needed answers and quick. “You been mighty quiet since we left.”

“Yea, just in shock from seeing my grandma in a hospital bed.”

“O okay.” With that he just drove home in silence while I tried to figure out my relationship problems.
