~~~Astrid's POV~~~
I spent all night tossing and turning in bed. No matter what I attempted to do or think, my mind kept going back to the events of the last 24 hours.
I thought that I would be exhausted, that sleeping would be easy. But as I stared at the ceiling, I realized that it wouldn't be so easy.
With a sigh, I sat up from the bed. Jeff the Killer had tried to kill me. He had wrapped a hand around my neck, and had been mere inches from jamming a knife into my chest. Hell, I had a cut on my shoulder, and the credit was fully his.
Someone named EJ knew him and was out for my kidney. I had memorized the license plate of a car, though I was sure I'd never use it. There were wounds riddling my torso, painful reminders of how close I was to death.
Katy was sleeping in the guest room, while my mother was in her own room. I stared at the dent on the floor where my dresser had landed when I overturned it.
Jeff the Killer had tried to kill me.
No matter where my mind went, it always ended up in the same place.
No matter how much I told myself to just forget about it, I could only hear his groaning and grunting when the men cut his body. When they carved into him like his body was a blank canvas.
And the sadistic smile when they had turned to me. The grin I caught when he realized they had tortured me.
He was a serial killer! Why was I hesitating?
I stood up and walked over to my dresser. No one deserved that fate.
Plus, if they were right, and the mansion did exist, and Jeff did know the location... Maybe it was meant to remain hidden.
My room was dark, but I didn't care. I just grabbed my computer and my headphones and sat on my bed. It was about 11:00 pm, but I still tried to Skype with a trusted friend. (He was actually an Internet friend, but if my mother found out she'd kill me. So for her sake, I met him at the library.)
Soon enough, his face appeared on screen. My friend, Sky, had vivid grey eyes and dyed light blue hair. He had sharp features and I deemed him to be extremely attractive. He was in a dark room, his face illuminated by what I guessed was the glow of his computer screen. I was in the same environment.
"Sky! Thank you so much for answering. I need a favor." I said, jumping down to business. He rolled his eyes and snuggled further into his blankets.
"Astrid, it's late. Ask me tomorrow." He muttered, though he didn't break the connection. He obviously wanted to listen to my request.
"I have a license plate number, I need you to tell me where the car was last seen." I said, to which he merely raised an eyebrow.
"What makes you think I can do that?" He asked, leaning forward.
"You hacked into my computer and stole my game stats." I said. "Plus, you're always bragging about your hacking skills. So just help me."
There was a moment of silence. Finally, he nodded. "Send me the number. I'll look into it."
Triumphant, I sent him the numbers and letters in a message. For a few seconds, he typed madly into his computer. I watched him work quietly, waiting to see what he pulled up. Finally, he nodded.
"Okay, what do I get in return?" He asked with a corky grin. I was sure that he had found the car.
"I'll willingly help you get better stats on your favorite game." I offered. He paused for a moment and nodded, apparently satisfied.
"Jo's Burger joint. It just got there, so whoever is in the car should take a while." I smiled.
"Thank you so much, Sky. I owe you my life. I'll help with those stats, pinky promise! See yah!" I said excitedly. He merely chuckled at my enthusiasm and severed the connection. On the chat bar, a message appeared.
I don't even wanna know why you're tracking someone's car. Don't do anything stupid. ~Sky
I merely grinned and shut down my computer. In just a few minutes, I was dressed in my favorite jeans and a red hoodie. I sneaked out of the house quietly and set out to find Jo's Burger Joint before they departed.
However, the darkness didn't help my mental state. I was still jumpy, glancing over my shoulder every five seconds.
Why was I doing this?
Why was I going back?
Had I lost my mind?
I didn't know the answer to those questions. I just knew that as much as I wanted Jeff to pay for trying to kill me, no one deserved the fate that befell him. Torture was a fate worse than death, and I wasn't going to let him live it.
But after I saved his sorry ass, I would kick I'm in the jewels again.
That would be my price.
