~~~Astrid's POV~~~
Every muscle in my body froze. For a moment I cursed myself, thinking that it was fear that was immobilizing me. But then, I felt a familiar rush going through my veins. My fight or flight instincts kicked in. He wouldn’t catch me off guard. Not again.
Jeff stared at me for a moment, his eyes taking in my appearance.
“You’re walking.” He noted. ‘Yeah, no thanks to you.’ I wanted to yell, but the words remained stuck in my throat. I wanted to yell at him for what he did, to curse him and tell him how much I hated him. Yet for some reason I couldn’t seem to get a word out.
Suddenly, my muscles unfroze. And I swung my fist aimed right at his face.
Pain exploded in my knuckles as soon as they made contact with his jaw, but that didn’t stop me from going for another hit. Perhaps both surprised and confused, he didn’t immediately react. I managed to get two more hits in by the time he finally reacted. He dodged the next swing and grabbed my wrists to stop me from swinging again. I tried to yank my hands out of his grasp but it was like steel.
“Let me go, you son of a-” I began, pulling away desperately. Suddenly, it was as if all the strength in me faded. All the pain from my various injuries came flooding. My legs exploded in agony, they buckled. The spirit of the protector was turning her back on me? Jeff let go of one of my wrists to help steady me.
“Hey- Hey! Listen!” He said, trying to get my attention.
“Yeah!? Listen? Like you did before you stabbed me?” I managed to yank my second wrist away but without Jeff to support me, I stumbled. My legs refused to work, so I fell on my butt.
Jeff tried to help, but I just grabbed the front of his hoodie and pulled him closer. Before he could figure out what I was doing, I reached into his pocket and grabbed his knife. He was about to back away, but I just pulled him closer and jabbed the blade under his neck.
He froze. For a few seconds, we were both silent. I was sitting on the floor, attempting to ignore the immense pain in my legs, he was squatting in front of me, eyes focused on my own.
“I hate you.” I seethed. I could feel the killers, the monsters gathering around us. Most of them didn’t know who I was, but I couldn’t be bothered to care. “You’re a monster.”
“Astrid…” He began, pausing when I pressed the knife a little harder on his skin. “I’m sorry.”
“Yea. Me too.” I whispered, flicking the blade. It cut into his skin, leaving a flesh trail of blood that soaked into his hoodie. A few of the killers stepped forward to stop me.
For a moment, I lost it. I lost my grasp on everything that mattered and I could only be bothered with revenge. I swung my arm back, ready to stab Jeff. But the knife never made it to its destination. Before I could pierce his skin, something wrapped around my arm.
I tried to fight against it, but I was still sitting, I was at a disadvantage. I dropped the knife to my other hand and tried to stab at what was holding my arm in place and saw…
“Shit.” I muttered just as static filled my mind. I tried to focus, I tried to remain aware of my surroundings, but within seconds everything seemed to be fading away. The fight in me drained away, my will, my conscience… Everything seemed so far away…
Everything went dark.
